Hey guys my buddy is looking to get into WHFB. He plays Eldar in 40k. He likes the Skaven but doesn't want to pay a whole lot money wise. I told him your going to have to for sure if you play Skaven. He wants to play WHFB but get an army as cheap as possible. So the question is which army would be the cheapest money wise to start up besides the IOB Skaven and High Elves? I thought it would be Ogre Kingdoms but Im really unsure. Need some answers on this on dakka because I know 40k a lot more then WHFB as I just started WHFB myself earlier this summer.

Basic models? Ogre Kingdoms though the box sets are bit hard to find now due to the impending update (supposedly in October). Two box sets would have him pretty well set except for scraplaunchers which are direct only...but you need them. Rumor is a plastic set for them come October so he might want to wait a bit unless he's in a hurry.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do |

Thats what I thought. Are they gonna try and make Ogre Kingdoms more pricey money wise after the update do you think? Because Im sure GW will try to do such a thing.

Its a good bet that the metal kits will become plastic/finecast - which could mean a price increase. Units that have not or will not be getting uprade kits (going on a limb here) like Bulls and Iron Guts...may be uneffected - but who knows its GW.

I don't know if the basic Ogres (bulls, IG, LB) are getting new sculpts or not. Regardless, you can get these cheaply enough and buy new plastics once the update happens.
Skaven are NOT cheap. Yes, the IoB set is sweet and cheaper than buying regiment boxes, but they are the epitomy of horde and you need so damned many of them that you'll easily spend lots of money on clanrats/slaves. For my 3k army, I've had to get the equivelant of six IoB rat sets. I got them off eBay at $30.00 but that's still $180 for mostly clanrats. Add to that the HPA, a couple of Cannons, and a Bell... well, you get the picture. Still, I do love my Skaven army.

I'm not 100% about this but I would imagine that dark and high elves wouldn't kill your wallet either. The aries I see don't have 30 hordes running around at least, except one guy with a 10X10 of witches...I cry a little every time I see it...

How are skaven not cheap these days? You can get a full IOB skaven set for $35. 2 or 3 of those and you have a MUCH better start to an army than any battalion box or army package that cost about the same or more.

2 battalions and a stegadon is far from 3k. You also need a slann for lizardmen to really be effective.

More like two battalions two stegs a slaan and a sallamander = 2500.
And it involves minor converting.

I stand by the fact that IOB will give you the most bang for the buck, even considering it's a horde army. It has more models than a battalion at a third the price.
It's a shame that the High Elves part of IOB is almost useless. Swormasters and the mage are nice but the griffon is useless as are the reavers and the sea guard are overpriced.

Pretty sure.
Also, most of Mantics models are terrible.

GW are quite in their right to not allow competitiors models in stores simply because they don't sell them. That's not 'being the hobby'.

I'm just going from what I have seen the mantic models look nice.
I agree with gw not wanting masses of models from a competitor advertised in their stores it is buisiness after all.
Cheapest well best bang for your buck would be IoB no doubt HE are almost all set with 2 sets plus a hero or 2 and a Mage.

More like they have their head in the sand and refuse to acknowledge that other companies even exist, let alone that there is any competition in the market.
Personally GW stores are worthless, BUT if it's your ONLY local option for a place to play, then you are forced to abide by their rules. I'd rather drive an extra hour than play in a GW store. GW are the Wal Mart of the gaming world only without all the low prices. You morally hate them but some times they are the only option.

Not selling the competition is not the same as refusing to admit they exist.
Take Vampire Counts for example. There is no plastic kit for a general, so you are forced to choose from what they offer, which is slim pickings. Female character in armor? Not gonna happen as the Lhamians are almost naked. I personally don't like 90% of the characters GW offers. So if I go buy a Reaper vamp to use, GW bans it from the store. A single model.
The policy is "Buy us or gtfo".

I would say Warriors of Chaos and Ogres, none of them need 40 man units.
I agree with aerethan, the internet has tons of IOB Skaven sets for like 30-35, so like three of those gives you around, 6 Rat Ogres, 2 Warlords, one of which you can convert into a BSB, 2 Warlock Engineers, 6 Weapon Teams and about 108 Clanrats/Slaves (Not counting the copies of the unit command)
For 90-105, that ain't bad.
