So here's the idea of this thread:

I'm going to make a blood ravens army using the blood angels codex, and being a fluff man as I am I wish to make them fluffier than a cloud.

Whilst I don't believe that ravens are angels sucessors games workshop hasn't said otherwise so...

Now for the creative part. I'm working out what charachters and squads relate to the blood ravens, and any that don't fit, I don't intend to use. So far I have come up with this:

Mephiston = librarian Jonas from the blood ravens trilogy. Both are powerful psykers, so it stands to reason that they could be on par with eachother. Another alternative would be isador, but I wish to keep my list as loyalist as possible

Commander Dante = Gabriel angelos/Davian Thule. Both ravens captains are extremely capable captains, with angelos even knowing when to ally with the eldar to ensure galactic safety, showing tactical genius.

Astorath I can't think of anything for, suggestions are appreciated

The sanguinor = a psychic projection of the unknown primarch, when modelling this charachter I may either make the face look a little more generic space marine, or simply leave this unit out

Captain Tycho = indrick boreale, both were celebrated captains and both died whilst on campaigns

Furioso dreads = ravens have a high proportion of librarians, it stands to reason some of them would end up entombed in a dreadnought shell, however I wouldn't use death company dreads as I believe the dreads would be old and wise enough to refute the blasphemies of their corrupted brethren

Sanguinary guard = I can't think of any fluff for them, so any help is brilliant!

Sanguinary priests = chaplains tasked with keeping an eye on the death company (see below)

Death company = some of the ravens corrupted by the chapter master felt shame and wished for redemption. Recognising the need for cannon fodder, and to offer them a chance to redeem their souls before the emperor, the chapter master and an (as yet un-named) chaplain decided to formulate a death company, marines who would be allowed one last fight to redeem themselves. Those who fail to die in battle are subject to the emperors divine justice by the chaplain in charge of their ranks

Lemartes = prathios I believe his name was, from the blood ravens trilogy. Mortally wounded by the eldar, he miraculously recovered from his wounds and volunteered to monitor the death company to ensure they remain loyal and have no bad intentions

Baal predator = being that they had to combat tyranid hordes, the blood angels decided to give the ravens the blessing of baal predator templates that they may better scour the imperial space of the tyranid blasphemies.

So, what do you guys think? Any changes I should make? Any help is appreciated!

Blood Ravens are a codex chapter with a large amount of Librarians. They aren't anything like BA, except the name.

Whilst I respect your opinions, I wish to point out that the angels are also a codex chapter, with the exception of the death company. I'm trying to get some other opinions on what charachters have parallels with what, so constructive criticism would be appreciated

Honestly, looking at the way they fight in the DoW games I'd say they're a pretty standard codex chapter, they don't even share any tactical quirks with the BA. As Coolyo said, it's only really the name that's similar (well ok the logo is also similar and they're also red).

Representing them with anything other than Codex: Space Marines would run the risk of coming across as you just tying to use the most powerful codex rather than the most fitting one.

Of course, it's entirely up to you, just an my opinion.

Well, i personaly think that they are best represented with the vanilla dex but if you prefer the Blood Angels one then...

- Mephiston as Jonas/ Isador is a bit meh. Both are powerful psykers but not that exceptional. Azariah Kyras on the other hand...
Spoiler:
( especialy if you go for his daemonprince form in a renegade BloodRavens force )

- Dante as Gabe
Spoiler:
( after he becomes chaptermaster )
sounds good. Not 100% fitting but alright. Another option would be Captain Diomedes which allows you to play a Honour Guard force.

- I would leave the Sanguinor out. He fits nothing of the chapter's fluff.

- Sanguinary Guard = Vanguard Veterans / Honourguard members with jumppacks.

- leave the Deathcompany out because the Bloodravens have no such thing and your explaination for them sounds pretty cliche.

- Lemartes -> Reclusiarch Mikelus. Spares you from using one of Goto's characters

- Baal Predator -> Who needs the EmoAngel's blessing? We totaly found this Baal Predator abandoned on the battlefield. Realy. Like so many of our belongings. *coughs*

I concur with the azariah comment, good food for thought. Could have him pre dow2 but perhaps with a small chaos star somewhere on his armour, or red eyes etc. Generally looking mean. Mikelus is good but I LOVED prothius, he was such a cool charachter imo

Sanguinor is getting left out, good idea with the sanguinary guards though will definitely be stealing that idea. Also going to take into account what you referenced about the death company, will probably give them a miss too, no great loss.

The standard marine codex irks me, most of the special charachters are ultramarines (calgar, sicarius, tigurius, cassius, chronus, telion), though I have made a list using that codex that I intend to play with, the blood angels codex is simply a side project to add a stormraven to my vanilla list, and to get some use out of my assault marines from my battleforce lol

Do the dark angels they are more in common than the blood angels. ESPECIALLY in the fact that half their chapter went rouge, so they share more similarities, and let us not forget the Dark Angels have alot of libys as well and similar structure. SO it can be concluded the two chapters are close and the Dark Angels have their own variants of predators. I beat there is such thing as a plasma predator

"Because GW hasn't said otherwise" is a silly reason to implement Blood Ravens as a Blood Angels force. They haven't said the Blood Ravens aren't successor chapters of any other Codex chapter either. Nor have they said they aren't the Alpha Legion, or something equally silly. That said, I would use Codex: SM for them since they are basically a standard Codex chapter, except they have a surplus of Librarians. You could handle that by using Librarian HQs.

I was thinking of making a Blood Ravens army using Grey Knights, due to the Brotherhood of Psykers rule, but the rest of the equipment is too far off-base.

I don't really see BA as BR... DC, Sang Guard, Mephiston, Astorath... none of them really fit for me. You could make it work, but I can't see it being fluffy if that's what you're after.

Without wanting to drag this off topic, I don't recall it ever being mentioned that the Dark Angels have a larger than average number of Librarians. Source?

Codex Dark Angels for a long time has done this, as has some various bits and bobs of fluff.

They're not fielding Librarians in huge squads, but almost every single force the Dark Angels send has a Librarian accompanying it as part of the 'Council' that is in command.

Yes, but you all need to know that Dark Angels Librarians have absolutely terrible powers, and using their codex is a death sentence if you're not doing a predominantly Deathwing, Ravenwing, or Dualwing army.

Which is really dumb, considering Deathwatch has some fun powers.

"Mask of Shadows" in particular would be a cool one, if hard to implement into 40k proper.
