Hey guys I recently just got a gaming table in my basement and me and my neighborhood gamers are about to pony up the dough to get quality terrain. The question is, whats a good place to get terrain for 40k?

War torn worlds makes great durable terrain. I would suggest making any buildings you want though there pricey for the most part. Something i do every year is buy all the tree's on clearance after christmas. They normally go for a dollar or two and you get a ton.

There's this company called Games Workshop that makes excellent terrain for 40k, you should check them out

To be honest, the GW terrain is very good. Pegasus Hobbies, as mentioned, make very nice Gothic buildings and also some more technical looking buildings that would work great for a hiveworld. Gale Force 9 has these "battlefield in a box" terrain pieces that come prepainted, and since all terrain generally needs is a few drybrush layers, they look very good and are pretty cheap.

Anyone got/used seen the pegasus hobbies stuff? looks o.k from what i can see but i'd like to know more about the terrain? at the moment i'm using Amera plastics stuff, it's not bad for the price but it lacks detail, plus side is you can get a large building cheap and add floquil to texture!

GW does make some nice terrain for their games. JR Miniatures also has a 28mm line and you can get sci-fi related stuff and generally decent generic terrain like roads, rivers, swamps, forests and desert terrain.

I also find that the local pet supply store has some great finds in the aquarium section. I've gotten some great looking ruins pieces ranging from greek to egyptian and even something with an indochina feel from there along with some great plastic plants to use to create jungle terrain. Also have gotten some great rock formation pieces that look great on the table top too. They are often rotating their stock so things go on sale often as well.

Armourcast also still has a pretty full range of sci-fi themed terrain pieces.

If you are on a budget, paperterrain.com has a few decent 28mm sci-fi pieces as well.

Also search ebay for old necromunda and gorka morka terrain pieces. They are plastic and card so store easily and you can quickly build them when you need them. GW also used to make a number of other old plastic and card building sets that you can find on ebay as well.

I've always had great plans to build my own scenery pieces, but aside from some hills and forest pieces I just don't care enough to be bothered I have found. I just don't find it interesting making scenery, but want good looking scenery on my table too.

I do envy those folks who work for GW or Wargames Illustrated who have all day every day to make really awesome and amazing game tables and terrain pieces, but I don't have that kind of time to spend on it so will spend it doing the aspects of the hobby I enjoy. Hence buying terrain is a good thing for me.

I am a big fan of do-it-yourself terrain. It always looks more interesting than storebought stuff. Yard sales are a great place to find interesting things that can be turned into terrain. Honestly, with plasticard, foamboard, and some paint, quite a few things can become pieces of quality terrain.
