I must confess I didn't look to see if this had been done before, and to be honest I didn't know where to look, so if it's in the wrong place maybe a MOD will redirect it. I recently started a thread on the legality and morality of recasting stuff. It got me thinking about how much suppliers loose out by punters recasting bits, buying 2nd hand etc. So I thought - only one way to find out - ask the people who know best!

I buy them online. Its the easiest way. There's no point in buying a full kit for a single bit when I can just get the bit itself.

Yeah, I don't know how to cast bits, and I don't want to buy more stuff just for one little piece, so I convert from the leftover pieces I have.

I custom cobble stuff from spare bits and assorted junk.

I have an ork warbiker unit that is tooled up with eldar tank guns instead of dakkaguns (as my wife has a literal sack of the things. You get tons on every eldar vehicle box) and fluff to match them looting an eldar repair yard

Automatically Appended Next Post:
(in my defense these were the old old plastic warbikers, and someone had clipped off most of the cannons from the batch i got.. I like them as they are supposed to look, too..)

I usually buy the extra unit, because I can always fit it into my master plan of collection...

But that's only when I don't have the bit in my bitz box, which is unlikely and has never happened yet!

I search my bits box, occasionally I'll trade for or buy bits from friends to add to it. I don't see the point of buying a complete kit to get something like a fancy pistol. Though if I need the extra unit and the bit comes with it, then I'd bother. Of course if the bit doesn't really exist there's no choice but to scratch build it, usually though that's for the more ornate relics in the army.

Usually I check if some of my friends has what I'm looking for, or if anyone on a forum has it for sale.

Otherwise I buy on a bit store, but usually the bit Im looking for is out of stock...

After a near liftime of modeling (a good 35 of my 44 years) I have a massive bits box and collection. I have cabinets with drawers full of 40k weapons, and 40k/WFB bits from all different kinds of armies. Just save everything you don't use and eventually you will have plenty of things to use for conversions.

If I need a really specific piece I will look on ebay for it. Lots of people buy boxes and then sell off the bitz on-line so you can usually find what you need.

I really dislike that GW stopped enabling you to buy their sprues individually. I remember having such a blast when the Eye of Terror campaign codex came out and I pretty much bought one of every plastic humanoid spure GW made for 40k and WFB, cut up all the pieces and then randomly assembled them into a massive horde of chaos mutants. That was a blast! Can't do that as easily anymore, though. :(

I have mainly converted things I want so far ( for example, I wanted special lasguns for some of my veterans and just cut up and rebuild the extras I had), but I have been looking on bits sites recently for some special pieces and heads.

A mix of all options.

I am limited to the number of boxes I can buy as I am waiting on a disability settlement and have no income, so I make the most use I can out of the boxes I have: Plasma pistols(which I only use on Guard) make excellent Plasma guns when you cut off the pistol tip and glue it to a Bolter/Lasgun with the barrel cut off. So converting from spares out of boxes.

My FLGS has a large bit collection but his prices are a bit high(NPI), when I need something they do not have and have no bits available for conversion I may buy online.

If I need an Aesthetic bit I will recast it(Using most of the methods GW says, or at least implies via telling you how to do it, you can).

lastly I will trade for bits or full models whenever I can(I just traded in an entire Warmachine Khador army for an IG Armored company).

Bitz box, begging and trading.

If I for some reason can't get the exact bit I want, I try to find a substitute that is "Like" it.

I've only once used a bitz site.

Ebay FTW. I have spent more money buying bits from there than I have on actually buying miniatures.

For me it's a little from column A a little from column B.

For my bike squad I bought a bunch of extra bits online instead of having to buy a bunch of attack bikes for the extra snazzy bits. But for my heavy weapon marines I bought extra Devastator kits not just for the added weapon loadouts in a tac squad but the extra kneeling legs and variety of tid bits. I've put servo-skulls on to objectives and and have a few other uses for some of them, haven't yet put one on a guy yet, but that could change soon enough.

As almost all of my CSM army is made from kit bashing, I just buy the box for the bits I need (which is usually the whole box). I also often trade with other players at the store for single parts (once got Chaos Lord lightning claws from a Fallen player for example).

I typically get them from my mates, if they aren't using them they sell me to them really cheaply, and then in return, if they need bits that I have but will never use, I sell them to them cheaply. It's kind of like a community of bits.
