Hey guys, I've been playing 40k for 10 or so years and haven't paid much attention to fantasy until my best friend picked up the 8th ruleset and several people in our group started to talk about wanting to play.
Well, that's cool and all, but my mind is so stuck on 40k that i'm having trouble finding what I want to play in fantasy. I play chaos marines in 40k and I like the look of the warriors of Chaos.. but I think I'm wanting to play the good guys for once. (or just not chaos marines)
So here comes my request, I'm still learning the rules, but I want to get building a force and start painting soon, so hopefully you guys can help me pick something or point me in the direction?
I'm wanting more of a deathstar kind or army. I like large monsters and heavy hitters. I think they are wanting to play around the 2250 mark eventually.
Any help would be appreciated.

Large monsters and heavy hitters? That would be Ogre Kingdoms. Otherwise Skaven is a pretty cool choice for monsters and, of course, heavy hitters. But then again they aren't the "good" guys... Honestly, the good guys lack monsters but Wood Elves got some treemen if you like that. Though it's a pretty underpowered army.
But if you like Skaven then you will get some sweet models with the Island of Blood box, and it's even better if one of your friends decides to play High Elves!

I do like the ogre kingdoms look, I've just heard that they are fairly underpowered at the moment. (I'm not sure how reliable my source is though, lol)
I LOVE themed armies, too. I was looking at the skaven.. but I was wanting to go with one of the clans... would that be possible?

I actually used to play beastmen back in the day.. like 10 years ago when I was young and didn't really know what I was doing... and I like them, too. All mino army a possibility?
Looking at Lizardmen.. they look like they would be a lot of fun to paint and they have some nice big models. Hmm. I've heard they have some nice magic, too.

Well, Ogre Kingdoms will soon release a new army book (as in REALLY soon) so you could wait for it. But right now they aren't great but not bad either.
Also, I don't know much about the Skaven clans since i'm not a big fan of them but I suppose it's possible to go with a themed army. But I will let a Skaven player answer that question, heh. Also, I haven't seen many Beastmen players and i'm not sure if it's possible to go with tons of Minotaurs. Also, Beastmen are a little underpowered as well haha.
But yeah, Skaven are good at the moment and I know that most players loves them. They got a little of everything.

What do you thnk of Lizardmen? With the new storm of magic stuff does each army get some options?
Also, are there any magic heavy lists that are fun to play?
I know I'm asking a lot of generics.. but fantasy just doesn't have any armies that jump out at me like 40k. I saw Nurgle and I've been playing nurgle chaos marines ever since.

Oh, I haven't bought SoM yet so I can't really answer any of those questions. But if you're looking for a heavy magic race then yeah, Lizardmen are indeed good, and so are Chaos.
... Heck, even Orcs and Goblins can field lots and lots of Goblin Shamans!
Anyway, heavy magic lists can be pretty frustrating to play against (i'm looking at you, Teclis) but it's ok.
But from your first post it seems like Ogre Kingdoms would be the best choice for you. I think the new army book is coming out August or September so it's really close, and they also got their own unique magic (Gut Magic!)

Skaven theme armies can be easily done. There are two that present themselves right off the top:
Clan Ektrik is the easiest as most of the IoB stuff can be used. Get a few sets, augment with a couple of Warp Lightning Cannons and a Doomwheel, and off you go.
Clan Pestelin is also easy if a bit more expensive. You'll need a Plague Furnace, lots of Plague Monks to push it, some Plague Censer Bearers, and two Plagueclaw Catapults. Oh, and lots of clanrats and slaves. Plague has some nasty spells and a nice synergy to it. Run a 2999 or 3000 point list to really benefit from this theme. Buy your Monks from bit sellers on eBay as you can get them around half retail doing that, assuming you're not in a hurry.

With Skaven you could choose your favorite area of any warhammer world, and make a skaven army themed off of it.
They live in the under-empire, and thus can be living under any area.

I'm also sad to say that the "All Minotaur" army is gone. Minotaurs are Special choices, and not even taking a Gorebull (Mino lord choice) will make them Core. Still, you have several decent options for Core in the form of Chariots or good ole' Gors. I've been told Minos are a built underwhelming, but I'd still like to give them a shot what with Fear and Impact Hits and all. They're slightly more expensive points wise than Rat Ogres, but they have a few rules over R.Ogres I'd say.
As for doing a particular Skaven Clan, there are a couple ways to do a few clans. If you want all Clan Pestelins, for example, Lord Skrolk makes Plague Monks into Core choices instead of Special. Clan Moulder can be done by taking Thrott who makes Giant Rats and 2 units of Rat Ogres into Core. Eshin already has Night Runners in Core, though they're a little lack luster. But any clan can get by with Clan Rats and Slaves in Core; they're used by every clan. If you can find the Heraldry of Skaven book, it's a useful read for matching generic clan rats with particular Big 4 clans; they even cover a few small "thrall clans" that owe complete allegiance to one of the big 4. Elektrik mentioned above is a Thrall clan of Skyre, for instance.

Hmmm, so do you think a Clan Moulder army would be a good choice? We aren't super competitive so I'm not worried about always winning, I just want a fun army that works well.
Let me see if I can read up on the Skaven. There codex is 7th right?
Also I think I can get the rat ogres for cheaper since they are in the starter set..

IoB gets you 40 rats & two weapon teams (wft and pwg), two rat ogres & a packmaster, a Warplock Engineer and a Warlord/Chieftan. It's a pretty good deal and getting three or four will form the backbone of any Skaven force you choose. WYSIWYG isn't a part of WHFB the way it is in 40k so it's all good.
Here's the thing... the 40 rats are armed with 20 spears and 20 hand weapons. Shields are intrinsically molded into the figure and cannot be removed. The general way of equipping your rats is to pick out the 20 with obvious armor and give them the spears. These become your clanrats. Give the cloth wearing rats the hand weapons and use them as your slaves. As far as forming a unit from the book, put a full command (Champion, Musician, Banner) in each clanrat unit and only a Musician in the slave units. Give your clanrats spears and your slaves nothing. Pretty simple, eh?

I really like skweel gnawtooth, but he seems really expensive at 108 points. Anyone know if he is worth it? I was looking at using throt as well, I'm digging the moulder stuff. I'll write a list soon and see if it would work. Automatically Appended Next Post: What do you guys think about this.. Hmm...you can only take two of one type of rare at 2k. I would drop one WLC (cuz ya gotta) and get more slaves. Units of 20 won't last long enough for you to shoot into them. BTW, read the Skaven FAQ. The book says shots into that combat are randomized, but the Errata/Amendments says they aren't anymore. There are some other changes you will want to read up on. Otherwise it looks pretty good. I might suggest beefing one unit of CR up to at least 30 for Ikit to sit in, because 20 aren't that sturdy.

You want larger units. I run my clanrats in blocks of 38 with a warplock engineer and chieftan/warlord in to make an even 40. I run my slaves in blocks of 50. I might drop my slaves to blocks of 40 but would never go less. You need them to always have steadfast and strength-in-numbers until they're destroyed.

High Elves are another army that's pretty good given what they get in the IoB starter set. The Lion Guard, Swordmasters, and bowmen are all pretty good at ruining your opponent's day.
In the end, my best army recommendation would be to take a look at the available models for a given army and then pick the one you want to paint and set up on the table. I'd rather lose with an army that has awesome models than win game after game with crummy sculpts.
Skaven & High Elves have awesome models for both and great value due to IoB starter.

8th edition is all about big, big blocks of infantry like 30-50. Also for high elves 1 core unit can have a magic banner so make use of it, the banner that makes attacks flaming is nice.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

I did buy the lizardmen book last night to read. My friend want to build up to 3k points eventually.. so would the special slann on stegadon, a skink of steg, a special and rare choice.. be a good army start? with some large blocks of core and some flyers for cannon hunting?
If there are any lizardmen who like playing like that and have any advice I'd love to start a PM with you.

My best advice is to do a search through the army list thread and see what other people are building. Pay attention to the criticism/critiques that are posted as well. Don't be afraid to ask your own questions about the choices people are making - just make it clear that you're asking for their thoughts because you're new and not someone critiquing their army.
