I've recently been thinking I've spent way too much money on 40k and would like to scratchbuild some models for my armies. If the scratchbuilds are any good, would you play against me, or would you walk away? I mean casual games at the store, I'm obviously not going to be in the GW parts ratio required in some tournaments

If it is wysiwyg (or at least mainly) and shows a bit of effort yes. If its some half-assed creation made only to save money, then no.

As long as it was too the right scale and fair rules i would be pleased to play you i think scratch built models bring a well needed uniqueness to an army and a battle.

In my experience, scratch built models have much more personallity than the build you get from the boxes; especially with orkz! Like its been said, as long as you didnt make say your monstreous creatures smaller than your standard infantry, it would be fine by me

I would have no problem playing against scratch-built models, but I would enjoy it a lot more if the player clearly put effort into them.

If someone was willing to lend that much effort to their hobby I'd be a jerk not to let them! As long as it's well executed then I've got no qualms whatsoever. People let me use my kitbash/scratchbuild scout car all the time as a Chimera and I've never gotten a poor word about it. Conversely, I've played a Necron player who wanted to use a Monolith he "scratchbuilt" that was literally a couple dozen YuGiOh cards taped together in the vague shape of a Monolith. I didn't let him use it.

Yes, but only if the models are unified. The closest example I can give you is taking Fantasy for example. A block of 20 guys all relatively have to look the same. They can't be vastly different. I remember a tournament army a guy made for Fantasy several years ago where all of his models were variants on fae.

But does turning them sideways obscure you're line of sight?
As for the OP, if its a friendly game I wouldn't mind scratch built models. I'd still have to go with what the majority of the other posters added (they need to be relatively close to GW models in size, and I'd need to be able to tell what model is caring what.)

One of my buddies is trying out an army made of oven-bake clay - they are useable as any 'humanoid' race, and they look pretty good! I've made some units from the clay as well, specifically units that I want to try out and can't afford (Try buying 3 full squads of Raveners just to try out a new list!!!) I plan on buying any models that perform well for me, as I love seeing proper and painted models on the table. I just don't want to be stuck with $450 worth of models that I tried a few times and didn't particularly enjoy playing with.
So, yeah, I play an opponent all the time that made his own stuff. Nothing wrong with it, and I get to fight whatever army he wants to play as that day!

Considering that before the most recent Ork codex most Ork vehicles HAD to be scratchbuilt or heavily converted, it's in the Orky tradition!

That said anyone has the right to refuse to play an army for any reason...

I second the to scale (roughly) and decent quality.
Unless your figures are really good, I would rather not see too many of them but vehicles would be very interesting to see (easier to see faults in humanoid figures).
I would also be totally cool with a game Vs really bad models if I get to light them on fire when I use my flamer template >

I Scratch built a Stormraven long before the GW Kit came out. My opponents have no issues playing against it. I even played a GW tournament at a GW store and everyone there liked the model better than the GW build. I Measured it against the dimensions of the GW Stormraven and the fuselage is almost exactly the same size as the Stormraven its within 1/8th of an inch of its length, height, and width. The wings are the only thing that is off, and my scratch built wings are about two and a half inches shorter. Shown here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/user/31450-DeathReaper.html So I have no issue with scratch builds. I love to see peoples creativity.
