I have a few things going on now, and I know that I've promised some photos elsewhere on the site, but I recently found a Defiler sitting at the bottom of my cupboard. My first questions were 'when the feth did I buy that' and 'why didn't I fething build it?' But some time passed and I thought of making it into a Guard conversion.
The problem is, I can't for the life of me think of what I could do with it. I don't want this 'am I a crab or am I a spider, I don't know anymore' model sitting there and not paying rent or killing metal/plastic/resin things, so any ideas or examples of what I could do with it would be a great help and put my Imperial mind at ease!

I dunno... Even after shaving off the symbols and spikey bitz it'd still look...chaosy. It's a challenge, for sure and I'm quite interested in seeing it finished. It'd be surely unique.

Those models are wicked - although the legs still look a bit too chaos-y for IG.

The best thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's far too late to stop reading it. |

I think these are fine, especially since they are chaos worshipping renegades along the line of the Blood Pact. Straight loyalist IG it doesnt fit perhaps...
But when you think about it the very nature of the 40K universe blurs the lines between good and evil imagery tbh. The Grimdark demands skulls and spikes and gothic detial on everything. For example many of the Admech/tech priests have a very sinister/evil overtone and look. In any other setting but 40K they would have to be bad guys on looks alone...

I actually really like those! The basilisk conversions are great! So converting them to a non-transport tank would work.
Having said that, I can't see why it wouldn't work for the Chimera. The only issue I can see there is the transport capacity working out. In these photos we can see the varying sizes of the Defiler chassis by cutting it down. I can't see why we can't elongate it... That's where the Brass Scorpion came from after all.
I'm growing fonder of the Basilisk conversion as I type... Do you have any other photos please CT GAMER?
Other than that, I'm still open to more suggestions!

It's a daemon engine, you don't exactly use daemon engines in loyalist armies. A better conversion would be to convert it into a Leman Russ through Dakka's Swap Shop

True enough SRM, but I'd like to do something with this thing. Regardless of the fluff, if you convert it enough, it wouldn't look like it's powered by a denizen of the Warp. If it doesn't in the end, then I've failed.
Much obliged GAMER, thank you!

GW has themselves destroyed any need to stick to canon/fluff.
Space mariens didn't used to ride giant wolves or straps themselves onto the front of a silly looking robot but now suddenly they do..
The Blood Pact use Stalk tanks.
It is perfectly reasonable to make an IG army with walking tanks and would be a fun modeling project. I say go for it...

who said anything about it having to be loyalist? theres a great pre-heresy mod of a death guard defiler with a loader sitting in the back, behind the turret, handing shells into the turret. This is also a prime time to go back through your Gaunts Ghosts novels and make a novel build for a stalk tank. I think I've also seen a warhound conversion involving mostly a defiler and a landraider. The real trick is: it HAS a battlecannon... on a turret... it screams leman russ. I mean, sure, its MASSIVE, but you now have a feasible way of fielding 9 defilers without it being an apocalypse game! With a bit of ingenuity, you can put sponsons onto the turret, and then the last thing youre stuck with trying to place is where to put the fron-mounted weapon. (It might be worth looking it to turnign the model around 180* so you can use the front tank hatch as a pintle mount to use as the front weapon.)

You could always remove traces of chaos and paint it in Adeptus Mechanicus Red/Black scheme...
Fluff could be that you have an AdMech contingent attached to your forces.
Just as in the First Heretic when the AdMech have the fighting robots that join the Space Marines in combat situations.

Make it a Mechanicus Superheavy/Titan maintenance vehicle "retrofitted" into a combat machine due to the Ad-Mech not wanting to stand around and do nothing hoping for the guard to do the job.
Think of having Legio Titanicus logos/emblems on it (or Ad-Mech if you want it to be a Baneblade repair vehicle for fluff).
Rules-wise you could play it as a tooled up Leman Russ (lots of different weapons to fit as Ad-Mech), or for a rather nice twist, make him one of the dogs (hellhound/devildog), could fit in with its lore in the fact that its a re-fueling vehicle for superheavies/titans. (you could model it with flamers connected to arrays of fuel barrels and stuff).

Also if you want it to look less chaosy make the feet not so pointy. If they were a little more squarish and less stabyoutodeathish it would look a little more inline with IG methinks.

Agreed.
Using Sentinel/Dread splayed-toe feet would add the image of more stability.
Sorta like the hydraulic stabilisers you see on work trucks with cranes or extendable work platforms.

Yeah, replacing the spike feet with round pads or Sentinel/Dread-style toed feet would do a lot to reduce the Chaos look.
Artillery, earthshaker or otherwise, would seem the best option - I suspect a walking Chimera would look cool but cause a lot more LoS and movement arguments as a Chimera's more likely to get up close to the enemy.

That bassy is totally badass. If you don't like the "crabby" look, you could always stretch them out to look more like a stationary platform like the FW earthshaker platforms. Also, of you play Apoc at all, or would like to, there is the possibility of making a Knight Titan out of the kit. There's a thread or two about people doing just that.

Wow, there've been a fair few replies overnight. Thank feth for the New World and Australasia! Thanks for the replies guys.
I've seen the Defiler/Titan conversions, but I don't want to go there just yet.
That Sentinel Buggy thing is funky.
I'm still fond of the Basilisk conversion so I think that that's where I'm going to go, but the temptation to turn it into the Leman Russ most of you seem to be suggesting is strong. I still have some Leman Russ bitz left over from my Executioner so I think I'll have a play around with that first and then make my decision.
