I was thinking of starting a 2kpt Necron army because I heard for the most part they aren't that competitive, so I want to make the most competitive one possible just to so I can kill people at a tourny So what should I get to make the most competitive list for the good ol' space zombies.

Or simply wait until the new codex is released because you may waste a lot of time and money on units that may or may not exist or be any good.

It would deffinantly be smarter to wait. What if you buy like 3 monoliths, and a bunch of destroyers, and then in the new codex, monolith gets nerfed and destroyers do too, but now warrior spam with heavy destroyers and flayed ones is the new power build? You would be pissed, because you would've wasted like over $200.

meh, I could get over it, the necron monolith is one of my favorite models anyway so regardless I would buy 1 or 2, but I guess I'll listen to you guys and wait for the new codex

I seriously see the monolith getting nerfed and some new deathstar of a unit being brought in with the new dex. Everyone who plays crons already has a monolith which are crazy pricey, they are already absurd in the old dex and no one really plays crons these days. It would be a poor choice on gws part to make a model most people who played crons already own the most valuable unit again. I'm sure they'll do something much like what they did with the carnifex and trygon a switch from one to the other.id with the carnifex and trygon a switch from one to the other.

I didn't care much and started Necrons a few months ago cause I love Undead in all flavors. I have no idea about tournaments, but I had fun playing with them in casual games, wins and losses somewhere around 50% each. I will be happy about a new codex, and hopefully better ways to get models than paying 100 Euro for 10 Immortals. So if you feel like it just buy some models you like.

My armies:
Eldar
Necron
Chaos Space Marines
Grey Knights
Imperial Knights

Necrons gonna get alot better, they are getting rid of WBB.

Now they will get FnP, which sounds better as they are soul-less robots, also some dedicated transports, so i would wait for them, though the warriors armour save is gonna be put up to a 4+
so they arent space marines comming back to life anymore, idk who the hell said they wernt compettitive and soon they be even more awesome

Now's a great time to buy old necron models cheap, but I'd just shove them all in a box until the new codex appears.

LOL Incredibly OP? If you can't kill the Necrons, consider quitting 40K. Seriously, just quit. Anybody who says they are OP is just bad at this game.

Exactly.

This post is win.

And I have seen many a rookie be eviscerated by necron players who weren't even that good. Hell, it happened to me a few times, but now I win pretty much every game against those things.

I started mine just a few months back and am very happy with it. I got virtually all of it in small groups on ebay and by now have a very large army. My experience with it has been very positive. More recently I won an RTT with them in the local store. So, people that say Necrons are not competitive are not taking into account a few important advantages:

1) most people don't know how to fight them because they are rarely played nowadays. So, you get nasty surprises for your opponents accustomed to fighting popular armies only
2) because they are a 3rd ed. codex, some of their special rules are so out of date that it is actually beneficial

Yes, if you fight somebody knowledgeable in Necrons, you will be at a disadvantage because there are some dangerous weaknesses that can be exploited, but that does not mean they are not competitive. It just means your experience may vary.

Regarding builds:
1) Destroyer spam - take 15 (5 in 3 squads). Take minimal warriors and a couple of monoliths. Many armies find monos somewhat difficult to kill, so you can use them to mess with the opponent's mind and make him ignore the real killers, which are the destroyers, and the weak spot, which are the warriors. Move the destroyers in a big pile, so they can WBB. Also, take a destroyer lord with orb, scythe, and shifter. The orb ensures everybody gets WBB unless dead in sweeping advance. Use the monoliths to teleport whichever unit needs rerolls on WBB.

2) Wraith spam - read DashofPepper article. Basically, 9 wraiths and some monoliths

3) Warrior spam - monoliths and warriors. I have not tried it, although I have ~ 90 warriors.

I also like the Deceiver and it is a cool model, but the rumors say that Ctan will only be allowed in Apocalypse, so you may wait to buy it.

Regarding purchase, this is the best time to buy many miniatures, because right now people think of Necrons as a bizarre uncompetitive out-of-date army, so there are good deals to be had at ebay. I built a huge army for only about 400 bucks (2 monos, 20 scarab, 5 spyders, deceiver, 2 foot lords, 1 destroyer lord, 15 destroyers, 5 raiders for heavy destroyers, 15 immortals, 90 warriors, 10 pariahs). Since some of the units may not be around anymore (pariahs), concentrate on things that will be, e.g. warriors and destroyers. Also, look for really good deals, e.g. prices at 40-60% of bought new. Some of the stuff I got at 10% of bought new in batches. If you are patient and keep a keen eye on ebay, you can do pretty well.

Also, this thread is about helping a new player start a cool army, so let's keep it on topic.

No problem - I am happy to help a fellow tomb lord.

I think 'ard boyz (besides the ork unit) is a tough tournament that runs at 2,500 pts per battle.

Most necron models will still be usable with the new codex, with the probable exception of the C'tan. That said, I'd just wait for the new dex . . I have a funny feeling Necrons are going to go from zero to hero overnight.

The best thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's far too late to stop reading it.

Personally I'm a fan of the destroyer wing/spam army list minus Monoliths plus heavy destroyers. Apparently it's worked for me because I've kept getting consecutively lucky rolls with the heavy destroyers. Loads of firepower and the speed you need to avoid cc. But I too suggest waiting for the new codex. Just recently sold most of my Necron army (4000-4500 pt) in anticipation of building a new army with the new codex.

the only reason a rookie would get stomped by a Cron player would be because he suffers a bad case of Monolith syndrome "OMGGOTTAKILLITITSTOOTOUGH!!!!HOWTHE AREYOUSUPPOSEDTOBEATCRONS!!!"

that and they don't realise that Crons suck in assault. they see WBB in action and decide that CC is a bad idea.

And his ranting skills

Dash is good, very good from his own admission and his tournament record, but i'd not want to play him in a casual game.

I don't mind losing (or i wouldn't play Necrons) but in a casual game i play to have fun, not screaming rules debates that owe as much to volume and vitriol as to the actual rules

In tournaments that kind of thing is to be expected
