Anyone know of any good tutorials of basing with cork board to simulate rock/ground? I have read about people doing it and seen pictures where it looks great, but when I mess around with it myself, it looks cheesy. So obviously I am doing something wrong. Anyone have any ideas?

This looks decent, but I haven't read through the whole thing: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/242206.page

Might help to see some examples of your attempts?

Keep in mind the cork always looks 1000 times better painted.

Some pics to let us know what problem you're having would help.

I use cork extensively in my basing to represent rock or concrete. The major problem I've had is paint not penetrating into the crevices of the material and the natural brown color showing through. That can be easily solved by diluting the paint sufficiently and doing several basecoats before drybrushing.

Putting a light coating of glue on flat sides of the cork and dusting with very fine sand produces a nice texture that matches poured concrete nicely.

Here's some examples:

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

I had the same problem with the cork color showing through. I spray primed the base black, then went back over a few times with a brush. The painted it Codex Grey, leaving some black in the recesses, then drybrush Skull White

If you want to take some of that "cork texture away just add a tiny bit of sand.

She works on it more in subsequent parts of the tutorial.

I love all of girlpainting's videos; she has taught me so much about painting.
