So I'm looking to start fantasy in the foreseeable future but I'm stuck at the first step: choosing an army

Hopefully some fellow dakkas will be able to help me. Here is some background:
*I currently play Space Wolves in 40k. I enjoy the ferocity and barbaric nature of the fluff.
*I will not consider any elven race. For some unexplained reason I can't stand them.
*I would like to play an army that needs some skill and understanding to be effective.
*I would like to play an army that is adaptable. Good in cc and/or range.
*Generally I would enjoy an army that has the ability to screw with the opponents tactics but if the army can't do it then it is not the end of the world.
*An army of medium size in models is prefferable.
*I would like an army that has the option of adding some interesting and diverse units/characters. It is not a must though.
*I would like to field a competitive army that is not that common

So far I like Dwarves and Vampire Counts the most. Ogre Kingdoms and Tomb Kings has also caught my eye.
Skaven and Chaos is low on the picking order.
With the rest (other than elves) I'm neutral.

Thank you in advance for any helpful comments.

Just reading the background made me think dwarfs. Im no expert in whfb but I think they are cool and might fit what you want.

Lizardmen, from most of what you have said, but I cant say how competitive they are. From the armies you mentioned only TK can do more than one army build to be competitive.

Thanks for the comments.
Is it possible to field an all slayer army? is it competitive?

Lizardmen is an interesting choice... are those cav of them any good or don't you need them?

From what I have seen Lizards are great since they don't really run away and have great magic. Dwarfs, on the other hand, have no magic but great magic defence. Slayers have the problem of no armor what-so-ever. They are fine against monsters and whatnot but generally people don't field monsters. Dwarfs can mess with a person's head though with miners, warmachines, and some really fighty lord choices. Their troops don't suck at melee either, they are just slow is all.

Is the slowness a huge problem? Can it be countered or made irrelevant?

Is lizards magic potentially game winning?
and can you field a competitive non/minimal magic army with lizards?

Game winning absolutely the Slann is the best mage. All the units are fairly elite they will go toe to toe with some of the best CC units in the game. The lizards are fairly expensive on points so you will never have a massive army but they do have some very good units,I have never heard of lizards being top tier you need a lizard player to advise on how competitive they are.

Just looked they are 2nd on the rankings HQ site

Yes no magic, they do have an anvil but that isn't magic, IMHO there anti magic inst good enough.

To quote my friend:

"The Dwarves do have magic. It's called the Shooting Phase". And just how is their anti-magic not good enough?

For thirteen years I had a dog with fur the darkest black. For thirteen years he was my friend, oh how I want him back.

Hah i like that.

Anyways though i had a blast with my dwarves. As stated earlier they have a ton of great "out of left field" units/tactics that can really make game interesting.

Ok so then lizzardmen take the lead I guess. Any takes on vampire counts? Dwarves is still looking good but I would love to play tourneys one day and last I heard( which was long ago) anvil was banned...

Vampires are good very magical and some scary units in CC they, they have always been a top tier army but (please correct me if I am wrong) they have to have magic to be good.

Dwarfs are good T4 across the board is very handy, but they are very slow. Unfortunately they need the anvil to be competitive, if they cant have that then they become very tame.

Empire are good and can do any build, but they rely on numbers.

So im going to say chaos.

Even tho it is low on your list it is still up there you have lots of options.
Troll horde
Marauder horde
Elite warrior list
Chosen
all cav list
Effective themed armies.

There is cool models and you can build a point and click army or play with something that is more challenging.

Warriors are cc monsters and well not too much ranged weapons, there is the hellcannon which does a great job.

Also shenanigans for magic tz magic is nasty stuff makes people sad.

That and you would have the most nasty lord choices in the game pretty much as in cc beasts and casters that are quite good not HE good but still pretty good.

Thanks cowpow but I think with what I've seen with lizardmen I would prefer them over chaos.

Lizardmen is also what I was going to say even before I read other peoples comments. they are very unique and can be made effective granite you can use them right. Slain is awesome and some effective lists can be easily made out of Lizardmen.

A dwarf army does not need an anvil to be competitive. Check out the Bugmans forum for good lists. The problem with dwarfs is people find them boring after a while they can sit back and shoot you to death or use an anvil and beat you senseless b with then new 8th Ed rules many dwarf players feel they are missing out on the magic phase.

Personally i am thinking of starting a Lizard army they look rock
