Subject: The Dark Eldar, allies to Iyanden?

Just reading over the intriguing current Dark Eldar codex. The timeline of the Dark Eldar has a quip regarding the Dark Eldar saving the Craftworld of Iyanden from being completely wiped off the face of the universe by Orks. (After they had just defended it from the Tyranid.) After the battle the Eldar asked why they helped them. The Dark Eldar's response? "We think your form of necromancy is entertaining."
This would be incredible for a fluff related game. Tyranids/Orks vs. Dark Eldar/Iyanden Eldar.

what did the DE mean by that statement exactly? that the eldar of that craftworld defy death by beating the tyranids? or they literally practice some kind of necromancy magic they find interesting and want to steal/share/ what have you

They have very few living Eldar left, so they Resurrect Dead eldar spirit stones and place them in wraithbone constructs called Wraithguard and wraithlords.

The dark eldar are capricious, they do what they want in a "haters gonna hate" kinda way.
With regards to Iyanden. Iyanden is characterized by Wraith constructs. Basically a husks that a dead eldar's spirit can be put into to do battle never ending.

And activating the constructs makes the Eldar very sad, so basically the DE were helping the Iyanden Eldar out so that they could continue to be miserable, thus benefiting the DE.

The Dark Eldar and Iyanden are not allies.
The Dark Eldar came to Iyanden's aid because they find Iyanden's "dabblings into necromancy" amusing.

The Dark Eldar and Eldar get on better than most people seem to think. They disagree with the way they live but being eldar they are still more important than "lesser" species. Eldar are dying out and neither CW Eldar or DE want it to happen.
It's the same way you may not like all other humans but if something started threatening our species we would quickly forget any differences.

They saved them because of the spirit stones as was said before. They are all of the same heritage (Ancient Eldar). In fact some of the Archons were around during the fall so it would not be too far fetched for them to see some resemblences of what they used to be. The Harlequins also go back and forth and I couldn't imagine if they truly hated on each other that much that the Harleys would do that. It is kind of like how you can pick on your younger brother or sister but someone from outside your family better not do that or else.

In fact, don't the Eldar and Dark Eldar refer to each other as "my wayward cousin" in some of the fluff? They certainly don't always get along, but they're not bitter enemies like Chaos and the Imperium are. They're both Eldar after all, and against a serious threat to either one, I don't think it too far fetched to think the other would come to their aid.

I think its rather funny, the reason for DE helpiong out Iyaden was pretty much "For Teh Lulz". Of course, its much deeper reasoning to help their Craftworld cousins out than that, but that was my initial reaction to reading that part of the timeline. Still, its very interesting, and it makes alot more sense for a team up than BA/Crons did. I kinda wonder what Iyadens first reaction was upon seeing the DE come to their aid.

Its not all love and daises between the two factions however. If you want to become an Incubi, for example, you need to kill an Aspect Warrior and shatter his spiritstone so that his soul is forever lost. Not what I'd do to just a wayward cousin.
Anyway, personally I believe, same as others have said, that the two factions do have a lot in common. The history and heritage, but the most important part being their shared blood and the fact that they're basically the same race.
My Dark Eldar army uses some of that as fluff, being based on a Craftworld and using some of the Craftworld's equipment (kitbashed Guardians/Warriors)
And in "Path of the Warrior" one of the characters is an Incubus accepted to train as an Aspect Warrior after a capture during a Webway raid. Supposedly pretty important, too.

Have in mind that it was not the Dark Eldar as a whole who went to help, but a single Kabal. There are all sorts of kabals around (including one dedicated to hunt CW Eldar).

To the eldar there is a very big diference between an eldar killing an eldar and another species doing it. They don't protect them because they want them to survive. It's because they think the savages are overstepping their place by daring to attack an eldar.

I'm sure that's not the only reason why the Dark Eldar helped, I'm sure it's because they like inflicting pain on everything too. Although we'll never know for sure.
On a side note, I loved the story of when they did Dark Eldar shenanigans to the Tau!

I noticed the thing about the Dark Eldar expanding as well, but I think that is refering to the kabalites that are born in tubes not Dark Eldar who have true parents. I also think that the two are closer since under Drazhars fluff it practically says he is Ahra. For the most part it seems to be a pride issue and that the DE feel that we are the same race. My Kabal goes so far as to have one of its goals be the reconstruction of the Ancient Eldar and their excessive ways...obviously not to the point that a new god is made.

Not allies, but a passing interest in the use of Wraithlords and the like. The Dark Eldar still hate the Eldar, but are fascinated by some aspects of them. Just because to races/armies/etc. are at war, doesn't mean they can't hold some admiration for them. Or at least use them in a way to gain an advantage over a common enemy.

Wow that is cool my guys actually try and behave the way that they did in society but still love to raid and torture but the have also gone so far as to call themselves the Kabal of the Ancients. They actually hold territory (thanks to a campaign) that was once a shrine world and are trying to avoid the imperium as that is too big for now. Good luck to your men on freeing Isha...make sure they exploit for every possible gain as is the DE way!
