Alright a buddy and I are starting a couple armies to get a feel for WHFB, what armies in the FB world are horde/swarm armies and which ones aren't? Which ones are beginner friendly?

Horde armies:
Skaven
Orcs and Goblins
Elite armies:
Warriors of Chaos
Any Elves
Ogres(low model count)
Easy to learn the game with armies:
Empire (competitive in all phases of the game, relatively simple tactics)
Dwarves
My 2 copper

I'd say all of them have a cheap unit option, even Ogres have gnoblars though you need a unit of bulls per unit of gnoblars. All elves are kind of pricey though. Pick the one you like the look and back ground of. If you are coming from 40k you'll find that there are not that many power gamers in fantasy it's fairly more mature and friendly. THis is pretty accurate although you can field cheap cheap large blocks of marauders and no chaos warriors.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Yeah that is the reason I am coming in from 40k. I play with a couple buddies of mine and they are ruthless and I get my butt kicked all the time. I am looking for something that we don't know how to play to maybe level the playing field a little bit.
The Tomb Kings are not a horde army?

They can be. Skeleton warriors are spectacularly cheap. It just depends how many statues and characters you want to salt in...

Honestly I really like the new look of the Tomb Kings. That's why I asked. I am going to pick up a copy of the Codex and read through it and see if I like it or not.

Note that I didn't list every army. Some armies can swing different ways depending on how you write the list. Warriors of Chaos for example. You can horde marauders if you want or you can choose the elite warriors to make up the bulk of your army.
Tomb Kings are in the gray area. If you like the look of them, by all means go for it!

Tk is great, new models, new book, easy to paint. Probably going to be another 6 months until cookie cutter competitive builds come out so go crazy.

Tk is good times lots of options and can be good.
I like my warriors haha low model count cool models and my core guys are pretty much better than your elite units yay me
Haha that and the models are cool.
Skaven and green skins are hordes no doubt about it no matter how elite you try to make them they will be a horde.
You could run a WoC marauder horde army big blocks of 50 mok gw marauders with fc are only 300 points so that is not bad.
HE more of an elite army since they got some really nice special and rare choices.
But ya go with models you like

I've always been the type of guy to go with what looks good and what fluff catches my eye. I guess i'll be spending quite a bit of time on the GW website learning about each army.

They can be fighty or shooty better of going with more of one than an equal mix, as in more shooty with cc support when the distance is closed, or more cc with a few cannons.
Most of the time you see dwarf gun line since they do the best job of it as in flaming cannon balls war machines up the hizzel.
Gunners are fun.
For cc hammerers are good times so are long beards (the ones with the armor I think thats them).
The anvil is good times for sure.
Gw on the cc units since they have low initiative so you might as well make em hit hard.

Dwarves: Strong in combat, decent shooting and Warmachines, no actual magic but ok "antimagic", slow moving but can ambush with miners and/or rangers. Fun and competative

Dwaf anti magic is some of the best in the game, the can have up to 12 dispel scrolls (6 spell breakers, 6 spell eaters) and get automatic dispell dice for having certain lords and heros in your army. Their are naturally resilient and have high leadership. Their heros are very hard to kill and they have a near unlimited combination of magic weapons and armor. But unfortunatly we are expensive, but unlike other armys our warmachines allmost never break and have high quality missile troops.
