It's quite possible that this is a result of their success. Many companies in the gaming sector - Blizzard, Bioware come to mind - turn from being a cool bunch of likeminded geeks with a garage hobby into a megacorporation headed by lawyers and former bank managers when they grow larger, especially once shareholding and investors become part of the philosophy. Naturally, this also has an effect on the product in that it may end up "missing the love" (or at least some of it). It's like a curse.
Maybe I'm just too negative/nostalgic, but this is how I feel when comparing the "now" to the "back then".
