You've obviously got the knack of painting details, good brush control etc. What you need to do next is add some depth to your colours with washes and highlighting. Get some badab black and paint it into the recesses and joints of the armour. Next, either wash the surface of the armour with blue (not too much) or highlight the edges of the armour plates with a brighter silver. For the gold, brown wash or chestnut ink, then highlight with a brighter gold colour. Reds just need a highlight of a brighter red. Hope that helps. Basically most important areas/colours on a model will have 2-3 different paints or washes on them.

There was a blue wash down to the entire model, and honestly I have no idea how to highlight properly.

I would suggest the same as I-bounty-hunt. Maybe a wash for some depth - the red areas would benefit greatly from a hard edge highlight. Simply mix the red tone and an orange tone 50:50 and apply this to all the red edge surfaces.
As for the base, maybe a drybrush with a lighter color for some contrast? I like the pierced head, but the earth areas do look a bit bland, especially compared to the model. A good base should always complement the model and the in your case, the difference seems too great.
Hope this helps,

I have flock grass I could add, but the ground seems a little dark to use that.

Maybe some "dead" grass? Yellow or brown tones would work with the dark ground and the would be nice to break the base up a bit.
Or have a look into the Army Painter Battlefield Scenics range. They have tufts of grass - more like premade clumps - in different colors - maybe the Highland Tufts could work.
Cheers,

Who's to say what the ground looks like on an alien world? Could be paisley for all we know...
As far as critiques, my biggest is the picture quality. It's difficult to actually see any real detail to give an accurate assessment. From what it looks like in these pics, the painting looks very solid and will likely lend itself to a striking army once they are all complete. It appears that you have some of the basing material on the rim of the base? I can't tell if it's the wash you added, actual basing material, or a little of column A, little of column B. Personally, it's a HUGE pet peeve of mine to have/see flock on base rims. I especially dislike it when there are just little pieces or spots with flock. Again, just a personal preference. I don't know what the general consensus is regarding that.
In a nutshell, as far as I am concerned, paint job= top notch, basing= needs cleaning up and completion, pic quality= needs work.
Interested in seeing more of this army. Good work.

As far as the basing goes, I unfortunately had to use superglue, so the bases are proving a little harder to clean up than I expected, though I am working to remedy that. As far as the pics go, all I have to take the pics with is my phone, an EVO 4G. Trying to get a real camera though.

Oh yeah - and drill out the gun barrels - it might not seem much, but especially in storm bolters this adds a lot to the overall feel of the model.

I'll do that when I get home, I'm at work atm. A few people have mentioned about drilling them out. How deep should I drill 'em?

A couple of millimetres is enough. Then you dab a bit of black paint into the hole. It gives a look of a real gun barrel.
As people have said the pics are a bit blurry and difficult to make out details.
However the painting looks neat and clean, with a good gold effect. A wash, or dip, or edge highlighting, would be the next step to add depth to the overall effect.
What you've got there is nice tabletop standard. It's up to you if you want to spend more time on them.

First, you drill out the narrow side. There should be an intendation there. Just drill all the way thorugh but be careful to drill straight.
Then mark the places on the front of the gun, where you think the barrel openings should be. When you break through to the previously drilled hole, you know that you are deep enough.
If the holes seem to small, just take your hobby knife to carefully widen the hole. With this, you can even correct your drilling, if it was a little off.

When I played mode, my paint scheme had over 15 shades on each piece of carapace.

You are going to need a black wash... then a silver/white highlight in a 1:4 ratio.

Unfortunately, that 300 point army vanished when I went away for a weekend... I think my house was broken into, and since the GW cases look like gun cases... -sigh-

16? 17? More? Why not just say how many you used?
Joking aside, those Tyranids must look incredible with that many shades/layers. PLEASE tell me you have pics? Clear pics... I would really like to see that.
