You just can't hide the damn thing!! with 12AV, it's almost certain that it's gonna go down! So, does the base reeeally have to be that tall?? Can I make a special base, using the same footprint, except about 2 or 3" from the ground instead of a foot??

Legally, altering models for gaming advantage is not allowed. However, if your opponent agrees with it then go at it.

The rules require opponent's permission to alter the model's base.

An alternative that would fit within the rules is to just make some bigger scenery. You should have some terrain on the table that completely blocks LOS... that's even explained in the rulebook, in the section on Preparing the Battlefield.

its what you get for something the size of a flying landraider. but seriously, just make/get/use some higher terrain, or put it in reserve, coming in off the edge of the table going flat out.

It's part of what tries to balance it. Because it's practically a flying tank, it is also very easy to draw LoS too.

If you don't like the fact that it can be shot at, field something else.

Well there is always the option of going fast enough to gain a cover save, you can only shoot with the PotmS but that still allows you to gain cover, move around the battlefield and, still fire.

Again, I'm sure that Apache pilots would love to roll along behind an M1 tank, crank up the engines real quick, and kill an enemy tank, but it ain't gonna happen.

If you think that your Stormraven is going to get shot up, then it would probably be better not to field one. They tend to be bullet magnets...

The SR model is roughly, what, 6-8 inches tall? A Space Marine is @1.5 inches, and most woods top out around the 6 inch mark. Most hills are layered in 1/2 inch to 1 inch increments.
Making a 3 inch tall base isn't going to do much for getting a cover save.

Speaking as someone who's only tank is bigger than most buildings..

Suck it up

The thing is pretty powerful, and to date the only vehicle that can fire while flat out. It pays for it's uberness by not being able to camp it behind a hill. If you're concerned then falt out the thing everywhere and still fire, while enjoying 1 shot a round, 3+ cover and melta resistance.

You can always switch to an army that doesn't have a flying tank capable of delivering a boatload of hurt then your problems are solved.

What army is it your fielding it with? Can't Grey knights move them flat out next to a librarian and get them a 2 up cover or something like that? My mate uses his to escort a furioso librarian with shield of sanquinius which isn't a huge save but it has saved him all the same. House rules also at my place a flyer behind a vehicle thats popped smoke gets cover but moving over it is dangerous terrain.

The reason it is on a base is to make it a easier thing to shoot. If it wasn't that tall, you could hide this monstrosity behind any small ruins and destroy your opponent even more handedly.

Best solution is to not run one if you don't like it being shot. It is a bullet magnet and will take fire from all the AA in range.
