Does Hive Commander still work if the Hive Tyrant is Deep Striking? It says if the Hive Tyrant is alive you get +1 to your reserve rolls. I just wanted to make sure he doesn't have to already be on the field.

+1 To Nos.
Hive Commander on a hive tyrant/wings makes an entire deepstrike/outflank army build viable. I've done it many times at tournaments and It doesn't always win, but it almost always causes mid and back-field disruption for the enemy.

Well the " if the Hive Tyrant is alive you get +1 to your reserve rolls." is a poorly written rule.
This is because after the HT looses all its wounds it may still be alive (Note P. 24 "Casualties are not necessarily dead- they may be merely knocked unconscious, too injured to carry on fighting or incapacitated in some other way.")
Discuss it with your opponent before the game.

Deathreaper - that having been said, being in reserves during the game certainly is 'alive', which was the question asked.

There is no real way to know if he is alive or not whilst in reserve.
Thus it is a poorly written rule.
I would suggest discussing with your opponent if his rule, despite not mentioning it works while in reserve, works while the HT is in reserve.

It is pointing out the fact that we do not know what is the status of anything in reserve, since the models are off the board. The HT may not have been spawned yet, thus he is not alive yet, or he may be spawned but in a hive ship, or he may be on a date with Jennifer Lopez, we just do not know. However its to point out how badly written the rule is.

Has the model been removed as a casualty? No? Then he MUST be alive. There is no other choice.

Has the model been spawned yet? we don't know. So we do not truly know if it is alive or not alive.
The problem lies within the actual rule itself.
The HT may still be alive after all of its wounds are removed as well, so the rule is written poorly, and needs clarification.

That's like saying
"My terminators deepstriking onto the table might not be alive because I don't know if they've been born yet"
And as far as a unit dying or being knocked out, that is a moot point since his ability requires his mental concentration... something he can't do if he's lying on the ground, passed out

How can you be sure since the model is not on the table yet? omerakk wrote:That's like saying "My terminators deepstriking onto the table might not be alive because I don't know if they've been born yet"
If the terminators are in Cryofreeze they are not alive until they get released from Cryofreeze. omerakk wrote:And as far as a unit dying or being knocked out, that is a moot point since his ability requires his mental concentration... something he can't do if he's lying on the ground, passed out
His ability requires his mental concentration? Where does it say this? (Hint: it does not say this) If he has lost all his wounds he could still use this rule since he is "not necessarily dead" It just requires him to be "Alive". (Yes this is abstract and extremist thinking, it is just to point out that the rule needed to be written better, and should have an FaQ to clear up how they meant for it to work.)

Yes, they are alive. Slowed but allive. Stasis you are alive but frozen in time.

If the terminators are in Cryofreeze they are not alive until they get released from Cryofreeze.
No, they would still be alive, otherwise when they were released from cryofreeze, they would thawed out corpses. That's the difference between cryofreezing a human being and freezing a chunk of steak.
His ability requires his mental concentration? Where does it say this? (Hint: it does not say this) If he has lost all his wounds he could still use this rule since he is "not necessarily dead"
From the Nid codex:
"Some Hive Tyrants show an instinctive cunning that borders on tactical genius, directing their swarms to encircle the foe and strike at their weakest points with unerring timing."
If you could explain to me how someone can do that while dead or knocked out, that would be great. Feel free to actually demonstrate it yourself on youtube; I promise to watch!
That is not just abstract and extremist thinking you are arguing, it is completely slowed as well. Do you actually try to argue idiotic points like this at tournaments and your flgs? I can't believe you haven't been beaten to death with tube socks filled with quarters yet.

i agree with omerakk.a unit that is in reserve is asumed to be alive.if the game ends with him in reserve he is destroyed.
also please note that Deathreaper is correct in saying that casualties are not always dead.however, casualties are 'destroyed' and those not are generally alive.
also,in regards to the casualty part,a hive tyrant with no arms or legs is capable of using psychic powers and synapse, and they cant go unconcious.they wont be scared off and they wont be runnig and surely not hiding

That all depends on what made them get frozen in the first place. People who are considered dead by current legal or medical definitions may not necessarily be dead according to the more stringent information-theoretic definition of death.

Fluff =/= Rules.
The point is, we just do not know the status of something that is off the board, or even something that has lost all of its wounds.
The HT may not have been spawned yet. so how do we know if it is alive or not?
I have not said if the Hive Commander skill works or not if the Hive Tyrant is in reserve. All I am saying is that the rule is poorly written and needs an FaQ, since the rule is not clear.
