With the weirdness of storm of magic releases, I want to get a more classic feel with recognizable monsters but have no idea who makes them (hopefully decent quality though). I used the manticore as an example because the new warhammer one barely looks like these!

Just for laughs

The reaper Miniatures Manticore is a bit dated, but has that classic look.

They carry several "old school" monsters.

Wyvern

Some names are trademarked, so you get Eye Tyrant:

Gah didnt think of using reaper, though their manticore seems to have a normal tail. Now where would I find a giant scorpion tail! (yes I realize reaper has quite a bit of those)

Look through Reaper's Bone-Yard for tail bits.

I can't say enough good about Reaper.

Also, I recently raided the back room of my Friendly Local Gaming Store for old "classic looking" miniatures for use in D&D games. They brought me out a box covered in dust that probably hadn't been touched since the late 90s, and it included a ton of awesome (but usually kind of corny looking) figures from Ral Partha and Rafm. If you've got a gaming shop in your area that has been around for a long time, I would check them out to see if they have OOP figures in their store room. Back in the 80s, there were many companies making pewter figures during the D&D craze, but there isn't much on the market now.

Old school models are by old school companies like Reaper, Ral Partha, Mirliton (Old Grenadier), Fenryll, D&D Miniatures and others.

Great quality, great prices.
