I'm a total noob with Nids and I can't really understand why everyone uses their Flyrants with Gargoyles.
Is there an obvious rule I can't see?
Please help.

They're too small to give him a cover save, but he gives them synapse. What a lot of folks on one forum I frequent do is run the Parasite of Mortrex with the Gargoyles, as that gives them mobile synapse.

There is no problem with their size. They cannot give a Cover save because they are using flying bases and they don't stand in your opponents way.

I was under the impression that the whole reason to have a Flyrant and Gargoyles was to give him a cover save.

If you position the Gargoyles around the Flyrant. The amount of Gargoyle models with their wings should obscure at least 50% of the Flyrant, granting a 4+cover save.

Very true. And quite a few ard boyz and GT tournaments have ruled in favor of that cover save.
Your flgs might not approve of it though, so as with all things, find out ahead of time before you buy models and build your list!

This was my take on the tactic.

I usually see them used with old aversary(spelling?) and paroxsym(however it's spelt) on the HT, then have the gargoyle screen either just as a screen, or with AG and TS then they parox a unit so you can hit them with the gargoyles and tyrant, so on the charge the gargoyles hit on 3's and wound on 4's with re-rolls usually

I've never had anyone claim that gargoyles didn't give cover to a Flyrant.

They're pretty bulky little bugs.

My friend uses Shrikes (winged warriors ftw) over Gargoyles for this tactic.

Wait... he uses expensive and useful shrikes to cover his tyrant instead of cheap, disposable gargoyles?

Your friend makes me frown! Shrikes don't deserve to be used as cannon fodder lol
If anything, use them in place of the tyrant and go with a different hq
