Hey,

So, as the subject suggests, I need something that I can use for a diorama that clearly and undisputedly looks like a sleeping bat. It needs to be big, like the VC Vargulf size, but easy enough for a bit of a modelling noob to convert so that the bodies nice and straight with the wings folded around its head and torso.

Has anyone seen anything that would fit the bill, or done a similar conversion and would be willing to offer tips?

Cheers,

Kitch102

Now do you really want a dead, dried up bat, are you trying to sell your pets corpse? Just kidding!
I don't know what you could do?

Do you think any one would mind when I plonk it down on the judging table?! Lol

Is the figure intended to be lying down, in a coffin type pose?

They might do if the dead animal is not sourced from a natural death Kitch.
ps handling of bats without a licence is illegal in the UK so don't try it yourself

Nah, suspended by its feet from an as yet undecided terrain piece.

Thanks for letting me know about the law over here too pal, that eradicates my idea of using one as a template to make out of green stuff...!

No probs. Thought you might be rash enough to do something like that!

There is a sculpt of a bat hanging from a lampost but not sleeping and it might be tricky to convert.

Is that law specific to live bats? This is taxidermy and a south American bat so it isn't "protected" like the North American bats are.

Yes, but there would still be a problem would be with sourcingwhich would be questioned if you see what I mean.
"where did you get that bat Timmy?"
"erm... Internet?"

The specimins seemed to be from South America, but there could still be a problem with catching animals for sale/taxidermy. It may even be legal.
Or it may not be the case, but given that they are from outside the USA I feel there could be some dubious ethics involved.

Sorry to be a PETA in the arse and don't wish to derail the thread. Not the place for a Dakka ding dong about animal rights
apologies

Well, honestly, I have no problem with what the hell people talk about on this thread, as long as someone can point me towards the reqiured mini / problem solver in the end! Lol.

So how big was this one dangling from the lamp post? Guessing it wasn't Varghulf sized? I need big. Like BIIIIIIG. Like "you were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off" big

this might be on the large side but it's made of latex so you can probably make a mold and cast it in resin. Click the image for the website to purchase said beasty.

That's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for, but too big (I may have over egged my requirements in previous posts!!)

Looking for essentially the Varghulf, asleep.

Is there anyone out there that can do custom casts?
Or anyone got the resin Varghulf? How easy would it be to convert?

Over the hills and far away.

What about using a live bat...? if no one notices its real, when it does move it will scare the crap out of the judges.
Anyway enough of being a blithering idiot spouting dumb ideas.

I also wanted to do something similar for a terrain peice a while back but dropped it due to the Varghulf being metal. But now with the resin kit it shouldnt be too hard to get something halfway convincing. Ive heard that the resin is quite pilable so i dont think it would take much work to get them properly bent into the correct position (Resin aficionado's correct me if im wrong). Then one imagines its just a matter of reattaching them to the body and straightning out the legs to make it look like its hanging. This might involve some green stuffing on joints and whatnot. Keep in mind though this will most definately be one of those "MUCH easier said then done" type things.

Take a look at your local craft store like AC Moore or Michaels anytime after the middle of august. A lot of their Halloween stuff is perfect for modelling projects. I think you may find your bat there.

Yeah I'll do that, cheers Snurl, though I'm thinking of entering this in to Golden Daemon so would need the whole diorama completed by September
