Everyone knows what their shortcomings are, so my question is, has anyone ever managed to use them effectively in recent games? I'm sure many people have heard of the success Fritz had with them in his Black Templars list, but has anyone else managed to pull out some impressive wins as well? Specifically, with good old vanilla marines.

i find ther too esy to destroy and as they dont get power weapons, except for the sg,their actually betteras a moving hit and run shooters, with up to 3 plasma pistols or 2 flamers and 1 pistol.

Only with Shrike at the moment. Vanilla assault marines get obvious "Wow, I can charge THAT FAR?!" mobility, and fleet of foot goes a bit of a way towards helping with vanillas lack of DOA for its vanguard veterans.

I've never actually seen anyone run shrike and ASM before. If you think about it, being able to move and assault so far means less turns out in the open which means less wounds lost. Hell, you could get T1 charge easy; infact, it would be impossible for you not to get T1 charge with infiltrated ass marines unless the opponent is all reserved. Hm... food for thought.

Correct. It can also mean a potential first turn assault with your regular backpacked ASM/Vanguard/Terminators from a land raider (12+2+d6+6) if the opponent has anything deployed on the line.

Also, shrike and a bodyguard of regular ASM with a powerfist/meltabomb sergeant seems to attract a lot of bullets away from the other nasties running forward screaming something about Sparta and "Anything you can do I can do better" at the Eldar.

Here are my lists and tactical notes:

I have to admit that I haven't played this army since the release of the GK codex, though. I think maybe a bunch of guys in power armor with power weapons and I6 are a hard counter to marines who depend on normal massed str4 attacks in HtH combat for success.

I actually run a 10 man squad in every game. Sergeant with PF. Comes in around 215 points I think, (don't quote me), and they rarely let me down. I use them to tank hunt. Deep strike into cover and pray. In one recent game against IG they killed a Russ, a Chimera and a Medusa.

I occasionally run a squad, but they compete with my Typhoons for space.

they are a good unit for beating up units that arn't dedicated CC units but they will melt to anything with lots of power weapons.

I was going to point you at Flavius' posts. He's the only guy I've known to really put the Vanilla Shrike & Assault Marines army thoroughly through its paces. It can surprise and wreck some folks, but has some definite vulnerabilities.

I have used them. They are just less effective than many other units for the same points. That said if you attatch a jump chaplain with a power fist, or Shrike to the unit, they suddenly get a whole lot better.

One match i killed something like 48 eldar, of which two were characters, and a wraithlord befor getting stopped. It depends on the list and what your foe is feilding. nuff said.

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

In large games I'll use them as a counter assault unit.

They help a lot when they assault something in conjunction with Terminators so that you can run the opponents down when they break. They seem to work better at higher point values when they're supporting or being supported by terminators and Land Raiders and whatnot. Their ability to Deep Strike is pretty underrated as well; you can drop in and run to avoid blasts and assault those grots or tactical marines that are holding an objective. I'm not saying they're great but they can work if you shape your strategies around them.

I only use mine in friendly games, well actually I only use my Marines period for friendly games, they not very point effective and just don't have hit all that hard I love the speed and look of them. But depending on the mission they fill a couple roles with the majority being counter-assault. I like to sit back and shoot with my Marines. I put my Assault Marines in reserves and have the jump on from the back of the board to intercept (aka speedbump) enemy units threatening my lines.
