I'm one of those people who has left 40k over the price hikes. (And also the restrictions GW has put in place for shipping internationally, Canada might not have as high prices as Australia, but they're still pretty ridiculous)

However I have to say I really miss the 40k universe. I enjoyed playing the game, but I will admit I've played way better games. The universe and flavour behind the game though is just so full of fun and destruction and grimdark. Not to mention I love assembling and painting the plastic kits in said universe.

I can't really afford to play 40k, but I can't help but miss it terribly. I never did make a large enough army for a single faction to play your average game either. (500 points here, 1000 points there, 750 in another place) 40k was a huge part of my life for several years and its sad to see it gone.

I play WM/H now as my main game, and while the gameplay is much more solid, the flavour just isn't the same. (Also, I like plastic model a lot more than metal, which hurts playing WM/H)

I'm not sure what I meant to accomplish by posting this, but I feel a little relieved for having said it.

I know the feeling, i'm glad i've things to finish off while hopefully the prices get better.

You could try playing RT or any of the 40k RPGs if you love the universe and fluff/story side of the game, i find they're pretty fun and pretty much free

I'm not buying GW stuff anymore (from GW. I'll still happily pillage the 2nd hand stuff) - but it didn't stop the rest of my stuff from being models I game with.

My SM still work.
My GK still work.
My eldar still work.
My guard still work.

When the rules change again, I will probably still continue to play (pending other games) but I'll probably just borrow the rules and/or codex from the resident GW fanbois in the club (in their bizarro world, the ONLY hobby is a GW one).

I also play warmachine AND infinity. I've never limited myself to just one company and its product.

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

Im 15, and over the course of 4 years ive built up a 2000 point ork army. I dont have a job, so i manage to survive off of doing odd jobs, as well as savng from birthdays and stuff.
My point is, i buy just about one or two sets a month. I buy everything from. My local hobby shop, and try to snag deals on clearence and sometimes stuff from garage sales. Its especially nice if you can save for a larger sets like a battleforce of something. I bought a mega force a while back. I was able to scrounge an extra squad of burnas, as well as tankbustas, out of it, saving a good 60 or 70 dollars, plus the added savings of the megaforce, it totalled to like 120$ saved. All in all, it becmes affordable as long as you stick to a budget and limit yourself as well as look for ways to work around the absurd gw prices.
Another thing, gw recently switched most of their metal models to resin, which i absolutely love, as i HATE working with metal. Theres not a metal model in my army, come to think of it.

Do you pay for a cell phone? Do you smoke? Can you set aside five or even ten dollars from every paycheck? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you can in fact afford to play 40k. You have to save up to buy things, or buy them used, but you can make it happen. If you don't want to support Games Workshop because you feel their prices are too high, then there is nothing that I or anyone else can do for you.

Actually, you can very easily buy everything second hand, in which case none of your money will be going to GW and it will be cheaper on top of it.

So you think the people he'd be buying from stole the products from GW originally then?

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I heard it sucks over there in kangaroo lands when it comes to GW prices. Luckily I'm a rich American that takes advantage of my debt stricken countrymen to buy more toys.

Recently I've been sticking to ebay when it comes to 40k. Ex. I bought 8 crisis suits for my brother which would cost $200 from GW but since I got lucky with the bids, I got them for less than $90

I just recently returned to 40k, not playing since 1995 (man the game has changed immensely since then!). at 41 years old, there are a lot of things I could be wasting my money on, but coming back to 40k and spending WAAAY more than I used to is still worth it IMHO. you can't put a price on the social aspects of the game, which is my most enjoyable thing about playing. yeah the prices are super insane from what I remember paying back in '95 (when I played Khorne ALLIED with Genestealers - remember when you could ally?!!), but it's worth it. after you go blow tons of money on stupid crap and realize it, it hits you. now I just put $10 out of each paycheck in a "hobby jar that doesn't include beer money".

And the point still stands that GW will not be getting any money from that sale.

I also very much enjoy the 40k universe, but the game itself no longer really does anything for me. I find it overly monotonous and cookie-cutter, and I play Warmachine/Hordes more or less exclusively as my game of choice these days.

I still buy/read most of the novels Black Library releases which helps me feel like I'm still immersed in the material, and if I really feel the itch to see Space Marines fire bolters I play Dawn of War: Dark Crusade or DoW2.

At that point the models have already been bought, whether the person who has them then resells the models or throws them out has no bearing on GW's profits. Your argument only really applies if someone is buying models with the intention of immediately reselling them. Maybe this happens, but I fail to see how it would ever be profitable unless you're painting them high quality beforehand.

Those things as subjective. Obviously if someone misses 40k then they must enjoy those things to some extent, otherwise why would you play it in the first place?

Not really. They lose the sale of a new set, rather than buying a used one.

40K is very cheap compared to most adult hobbies. If you're not an adult, well, you really can't afford anything.

I think most adult hobbies would be chaeper, unless you compare it to things like car collecting (which is like comparing an apple to an orange)

This. If you say that a secondhand purchase is a profitable to GW as buying from them directly, you must also believe that getting two boxes for the price of one is as profitable to GW as buying the two boxes full price, because that's essentially what happens. One person buys a box, two people get the benefit of having the box.
