I recently saw this game on preorder on steam. Looks like a fun WW2 shooter (havent seen those in a while) and plus it has some killing floor/tf2 promos so that makes the deal even sweeter

Since its a sequel, is there anyone here that played the original? What makes this game fun and different before I commit my money?

I played the original quite a lot, it wasa very fun and challenging game to master. The level of realism was quite outstanding and the tank battles were even better !

I have RO but I mostly played the mod Mare Nostrum, which was more my cuppa tea. It has a lot of realism, which can be crippling for some.

Best online FPS was the original. IMO, if you like the more realistic shooters and also like shooting fun you can't go wrong. Not BF2 'realism' either, but not as stupid as Operation Flashpoint walk 50000 yards and be shot by baddies who can see you through trees.

^^^ doubt that, a lot of games that used to be modable...now arent :/, BF is a prime example, as is COD.

I never got around to playing the first one but i think i may get this one.

Theres something about raiding planets and then bathing in the slaves misery and torment that really gets me. I love DE, and can now play in 2000point matches with the addition of my latest stuff! Kabal of the Purple Blaze.

I also have 2 squads of IG Shock troopers and a Platoon Comand squad as a start to my IG army For Cadia Check out my blog - http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/380874.page#3047386

Not only is RO2 very moddable the team fully supports the modding community, Two mods are actually near completion, IN COUNTRY a Vietnam era mod, and PACIFIC STORM a pacific theatre WW2 mod. They hope to release them soon after RO2 is released this month.

I would love to have a crack at this game! I've been looking for a quality WWII shooter that wasn't CoD (Don't take me wrong, CoD is pretty cool, just not very... realistic), and here it is! I'm so excited!

Every thread I touch dies.

Although if you want the TF2 Hats and the Killing Floor skins its $10 more, not too bad I guess. Same price for new games anyways. I hear the weapons dont matter, you'll unlock them eventually I think

Although I like TF2 hats, it doesn't bother me much. I usually play medic and the medic hats aren't very interesting.

The beginning excited me for one reason, the gibbing. WaW had it in its multiplayer and there was nothing as exciting as seeing somebody's legs blow off after being hit by a bouncing betty. I hope that the game's multiplayer has gibbing in it, but either way it looks like an incredibly well done game.

I must say that RO 1 is the best WWII shooter for me because of the realism.

Even better is the Darkes Hour mod (western front).

Its great to hear that Vietnam and Pacifc mods are nearly ready for RO 2.

I just preordered it off of steam after getting the first RO off of steam as well. I saw it in a local NEX for the same price, but having RO on the comp makes it easier to keep a track of and it comes with Mare Nostrum(Italy and Africa fronts I think) and Darkest Hour. Definitely fun after you get a handle on things, I was stuck in a tank because I didn't know that you had to open the hatch before leaving which was a really cool idea.

BTW, if you have the first RO you get a Kar98 with a bayonet, a 91/30 with a bayonet and badges for both the German and Russian soldiers along with an additional 10% off. So you can get the first RO along with RO2 for a total of $50.00 and get a lot of nifty things with it if you get it from steam.

And yes I finally broke down and preordered it because I liked the new commercial they had for it and RO proved to be fun.

You can pilot tanks, but you have a series of three positions in some of them. The three that I've encountered have been driver, gunner/commander, and radioman/machine gunner. As the gunner you can choose between different kinds of ammo if they are available(HE, AP, even Smoke) and they do different amounts of damage and are for different targets HE is more for infantry and hitting them with an HE is very fun because the first one has gibbing as well. Squad leaders and tank commanders have binoculars and can call artillery strikes by designating a position on the screen with the binoculars and then finding a radio to call it in which is refreshing from the whole automatic artillery barrage that Battlefield has.

As said, each position has the ability to open a hatch in order to climb out. The commander can look through a fps type gun sight, an open square window, or open up the top hatch and look out. If you look out of the top hatch you can call artillery strike positions, but that also makes you open to enemy sniper fire, the driver can also look out of a hatch while driving or duck behind a more armored view port in some cases.

Bayonets are available for rifles and can be affixed or taken off with the press of a key, save for the M44 which always has the bayonet fixed. The graphics in the first one look dated of course, but its a fantastic game that is really more of a simulator compared to Call of Duty.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Beta has been released for some people. I know that I'm installing it right now, but I'm not sure if its an open Beta or just for those who preordered.

Alright, tried the Beta out and I will have to say that from the one level they have out currently it is pretty fun albeit having a steep learning curve. Most of the weapons are semi-automatic, or bolt action which is of course to the period of the game. There are different classes available and they can level up similar to Battlefield, weapons can also level up with use. Exactly what this does for you is simple, higher the level, the more guns you have per class.

The classes differ mainly by main weapon so far, they will later be adding commander, squad leader, anti-tank, and so on in the full game. Right now they offer Rifleman, Elite Rifleman, Marksman, Assault, or Machine Gunner. The Rifleman and Elite Rifleman are similar, the only difference is that the Elite Rifleman has more weapon choices(can use semi-auto, bolt action, or automatic submachine gun). The Machine Gunner carries an LMG and cannot fire while walking or running, in order to fire you have to be prone or have the weapon resting on a window sill or some other similar ledge. The Marksman gets a sniper rifle and unlike other games, the zoom is much simpler with a small scope taking up a portion of the screen while the rest of the screen is unaffected. In fact any weapon can have their aim steadied if you are firing in such a way that your weapon has a more stable base to fire from, such as firing from behind cover.

Now as far as aiming goes, it takes a little to get used to at first. The aim seems slow, but it affects where the weapon is pointing until it is turned to such a degree that the screen actually turns. Most FPS games turn the screen when a person so much as looks to the right, RO2 is not the same way, again it takes some time to get used to but when you do get it down then you can start to do some serious work.

Moving and running are well done, avatars seem to move correctly and the amount of different positions they can take(crouching in cover, prone, etc) add up to a nice looking game.

The scoring is also different, there is a TEAM score which is for kill assists, giving ammo, etc and then there is your individual score which records your kills and captures when that game mode comes out. Kills are fun too, they have a kill indicator like most games but also incorporate different kinds of shots. Getting hit in different locations does different damage and it is possible to actually bleed out. If you take a hit to the hand your aim will be slightly off, legs slow movement, and etc. Headshots are almost always one shot kills and getting shot in the heart also comes into play. The marking for the kill will actually show up as a white torso with the heart in red, its a killing shot and you will die instantly from it. Now when it comes to bleeding, you get two bandages to use and the game will alert you with text and a slowly graying screen to the fact that you are bleeding out. I am not sure, but it seems that severity of the location(abdomen seems to bleed you slowly and cannot be healed) or morale affect whether or not you can wrap yourself up.

Yes there is a small morale system, it affects the taunts, overall sound of the characters, and the background music. For example, if a guy gets killed next to you, you lose morale and instead of saying something like "Die filthy Bolsheviks."(from axis view of course) you end up saying, "Go ahead and kill me, I don't care anymore.".

Now, there is going to be a single-player portion of the game and its going to have two different campaigns. One is for the Russians and the other one is for the Germans, which is a refreshing viewpoint of the war in any FPS. These are currently unavailable in the Beta, but I for one look forward to playing it just for the fact that it is different.

Vehicles have not been introduced yet, but in order to use them you will have to either be a tank crew or commander. Binoculars return to call artillery, and can be used as a melee weapon.
