Subject: How good are the Warriors of Chaos special characters?

Title says it all really, I've been browsing the book recently and before I put an army together I was looking for some insight into the relative usefulness of the Chaos Characters. I tend to use them until I have more of a handle on the army's basics like troops, specials etc and then build an appropriate lord and hero myself when I know what I want/need.
So yeah, what do you veterans think? Is Valkia the close combat monster she appears to be? Is Vilitch a good alternative to a custom wizard? Is Archaon ultimately worth his cost?!
I'm most interested in the three above and the following: Sigvald, Wulfrik and Kholek (especially since I face a lot of Skaven!), but if there is another character in there that really stands out let me know why you think so.
Thanks in advance guys!

Have never tried one either, so I would like to know too. A guy I know used Throgg with great success, with several trolls and the like. I also think it is pretty obvious that Archaon is a serious monster, having all that he has. A problem is just that their high cost makes them hard to fit into armies; many requires you to be over 3000 points in total.

I've never used them myself (don't play WoC) but I've seen some of them used. Archaon is hard-core, but pricey. Very pricey. As far as Vilitch goes, if you build an army around him and how he functions, he will do well for you. If you just drop him into an existing army list, he might not shine as brightly. I've never seen Valkia used, most likely because she hasn't got a model yet (and she never will, if I know GW).

Okay, thanks for that, I might have to give Vilitch a try as he's one of the cheaper characters to work with. Just one question though, what size base should Valkia be on? Is she Daemon Prince sized or Ogre or what else?
Anyone who plays WoC got any opinions?

She should be on a 25mm base, I think. She was a woman, who just was reformed a little (gained bloodletter legs and a pair of wings).

Haven't run them myself since they don't quite fit in but here is what I know and have seen.
Throgg makes trolls core he also makes them better worth taking.
Festus in a large block of marauders, regen save plus curse worth taking.
Wulfrik depends what you are doing possibly worth taking.
I have also seen sigvald used and do quite well.
Kholek fits in with a beasty list (that list usually involves throgg) he takes a lot of cannon fire but if he makes it to cc he will rip stuff to shreds.
Viltich meh you can build a mot sorcerer lordon a disc with better saves and more threat for cheaper.
Valkia seen used once (somewhere one YouTube possibly a bunker tube bat rep or something like that) she just got taken out by a wlc.
Overall not too bad just too expensive to run with too little protection.
As already said Archaon will cost around 900 to 1000+ points since he has to be with knights.
Still he is quite beastly too bad there isn't an option to take him on foot.
Harry the hammer is good times especially against tk or vc he really makes a mess of them.
Crom also pretty cool guy cuts things up and ya 2 hand weapon and a shield that's exactly what's up.
So ya those are my 2 cents hope it helps.

Lord of the Fleet

I've only seen Throgg used extensively but from what I can tell he is a very solid character. Takes up hero points but he can go toe to toe with several lord level characters, makes trolls core if you're running a monster army, acts like a general to said monsters, and also has a breath attack in case you want to flame something or let those 2D6 roll.

Wulfric is horrid, sigvlad can be scary in the right unit, the lord if end times costs more than 1000 points so you tell me.... The great drake is ok though squishy, vilitch is fun but I am unsure if he is good, valkia I have never seen, throgg is cool and good and festus is my homeboy

Well in my first game I tried Wulfrik and Valkia with some mixed results:
Wulfrik fared poorly, though that was simply because of some severely poor luck than due to being a bad character. He arrived swiftly with his Marauders on the Empires back field, pushing up behind some Greatswords. In the Empire turn they suffered a direct hit from a Mortar killing 11, and a unit of Flagellants reformed to face them. On my next turn they failed to get the ten inches required to charge the Greatswords. Charged by the Flagellants (who got re-rolls on hit and wounds), they didn't last long after that.
Valkia wiped a unit of Knights by rear charging them, gaining +1 to armour from the table for winning a challenge. and allowed several other champions to re-roll there lacklustre results on Eye of the Gods, pretty good showing really.
I think I'll try Wulfik again though, I can see why he would work, especially against irritating wizards like Teclis!
