Hello,
My FLGS is running a 40k league and you are alloud to use multiple codecies. The question is, what codex best supports a Ultramariens stile list? Here's my 1500 point list as an axample of what I field.
HQ:
Sicarius 200
Command Squad w/ Company Champion, 1 vet has lightning claw, 1 vet has melta bombs 150
Troops:
Tactical Squad w/ Missile Launcher, flamer, rhino 205 (X2=410)
Tactical Squad w/ Lascannon, Plasma gun, rhino 225
Heavy Support:
Devastator Squad w/ 1 Lascannon, 3 Missile Launchers 170
Land Raider Crusader w/ Multi-melta 260
Predator w/ Heavy Bolter Sponsons 85

So let me get this straight...your league is allowing you to do the following.

HQ from Space Wolves (runepriest)
Elites from BA (priest)
Troops from Grey Knights (Terminators)
Fast Attack from Dark Angels (Ravenwing)
Heavy Support from Witch Hunters (Exocist)

Is this how you guys working it? Cause that give a major advantage to the space marine player against any other army since other armies don't have multiple factions.

As in you can use more than one codex.

We are using the allies rules, so as long as it makes sence, I think he will allow it.

Wow, not going to lie, but Dark Angels Sav has a point, you can take that and effectively break the game.

I'm not looking for cheese. In fact, I am apposed to cheese. I'm just looking for the IoM army that best supports the SM.

I have the answer

Codex: Space Marines best Represents Space Marines

This might be a noobish answer, but surely C:SM. If you're opposed to cheese, and want to field an Ultramarines-style Space Marine force, why bother with multiple Codices at all? Just stick with the Codex based around Codex Chapters, no?

Edit: Ninja'd.

Thats what I thought, but I wasn't sure if there was another codex that supported them well.

Codex Space Marines is the template for Ultramarines; i.e. it's essentially the Ultramarines codex (fluff wise and rules wise).

Which allies rules are you referring to exactly? The only one I know of is the outdated one that allowed you to take Daemonhunters or Which Hunters with IG or SM.

Thats the one. We are just modifing it as we need to (Deamonhunters=Grey Knights Which hunters=Sisters of battle). Everything gets run by our league orgonizer though, so as long as the fluf makes sence he will allow it. For example, he is runing a CSM-SW teem. He is the alfa legon so he is just runing it as heratic SW.

Well I think you could then do what was mentioned by Dark_Angel_Sav, as space marine chapters, in times of great conflict, fight together all the time. Just say something like "my ultramarines are cleansing this system or something. Calgar called on all these other chapters, and appointed Sicarius to lead them."
That's okay fluff imo, and it would give you a sick list

That's just the thing though. You can stretch it to make just about any army have a reason for fighting along side another.

However, since the old allies rule is now just that, the only way to have units from a different army under one commander is to be playing Apocalypse. Legally anyway, I guess your TO is allowed to do whatever he wants.

The guy isnt asking what army best represents SM, obviously that would be C:SM itself. He is asking what would support he marines both tactically and in a fluffy way since he doesn't want to just cheese it.

To that I would say go with Imperial Guard. Powerful artillery and big squads to hold your lines, while the marines form the spearhead and take out the key elements of the enemy force.

Well, I suppose strictly speaking the Allies rules in Codex: Witch Hunters are still applicable for another three weeks (until the complete Codex: Sisters of Battle replaces it).

Well you could run 6 Ultramarines dreadnoughts, and 12 Blood Angel dreanoughts, that would be awsome!

Thanks! That makes a alot of sence. I like the idea of Space marines speerheading an assault while Basalisks and LRBT provide fire support.

Imperial Guard work well with SM's. The Space marines tackle the harder points of the enemy battleline, while the IG slog it home, overpowering any units the Space Marines are having trouble with and capturing objectives. Units such as MMV's can be used to take out armour, leaving Space Marine Devastators to annihilate heavy infantry such as Tyranid Warriors. Amongst the Imperial Guard, if your willing to acquire many Guardsmen, Conscripts led by Chenkov Work well as a sheer prcupine of lasgun fire that can afford to get destroyed due to

Best supports? Assuming no restrictions and only 1 codex and not trying to be a cheese monkey, add a little sacrificial imperial guard or greyknights. Don't go overboard, just a unit or two.

If you want to horrendously break apart the game, combine spacewolves razorspam + runepriest with imperial guard vendettas and artillery.

Customers ask me what army I play in 40k. Wrong Question. The only army I've never played is orks.

Blood angels, plain and simple, ultramarines just don't cut it, but with your list, you can only use the basic space marine codex.

EDIT: wait, what? Surely, this is casual, still, ultramarines < blood angels. I can't imagine how it'd go.
