We all know it......forge world stuff looks awesome. Thats true but, the back lash is the cost and the fact that the stuff breaks quite easily. Ive been looking at the hive tyrant and after seeing the pictures and thinking about how i would do it up I was ready to buy, then i saw the price.....80+ without shipping. no way would i pay that for something like that! yes it looks cool, yes the detail is amazing, yes its resin but really? with the conversion rate and shipping forge world prices just change too much because of that for my book. im not saying they are a bad company or anything. I love their stuff and have some of it. so whats your opinion on this?

The Emperor extends His will to us when we destroy the wicked and impure to reconquer the galaxy in His name. The Emperor leads the galaxy to righteousness, and thus we must petition for His judgement on the wicked... for it is judgement without mercy..

If you think it's worth it, it's worth it. Their models are really, really good looking, and are a bit fragile. However, if you're careful with your models (as you should be) it's not really an issue. They're painter's models though - I wouldn't get anything from them unless you were a good enough painter to do it justice.

This is really the core of what you need to know.

That and my standard "We can't decide a value on something for you, if you want it and can afford it without sacrificing something vital then go for it" spiel.

I feel the above poster nailed it perfectly with "they are a painters models". I'm quite easily depressed when I see pictures on google of forgeworld models globbed in paint.

I'm even depressed by paint jobs that would've seemed fine on plastics. My Forgeworld Dreads are painted through the same methods and look about the same as my plastic ones, and based much better, and they still feel depressing to me.

The smaller scale things like conversion bits are worth it. Their prices are too excessive, they hold up to abuse well, and for the most part are fairly well made.

The larger kits are an entirely different story. They come to you often misaligned. They are very brittle. They require an excessive amount of sanding/filing/fixing. And they're horrendously over priced for a lot of the larger kits.

Kind of agree here. My Heirophant has numerous minor casting issues. Nothing that can't be fixed - some of the exposed veiny bits on the front legs need filing out, and in one case, redoing with green stuff, one eye needed filing out, there was a chunk of resin inside the inner body that needed a dremel to sand out, and the head didn't align properly. It's been a lot of work getting the model to the 'ready to be built' stage, and I still haven't finished the legs.

And yet, when you finish one of these models, and plonk it on a table, fully painted on a great scenic base, you've got something to be proud of. The big models from Forgeworld are very imposing and never fail to get commented on from other players.

The large models are definitely worth it if you are looking for a long term project, don't mind having to do some work to fix minor casting issues (major issues are easier - phone Forgeworld, tell them, and they'll express post you a replacement part for free), and have the spare money. The large models are not cheap.

I definitely like Forgeworld. The models generally look better, and now with the embargo and price rises often the equivalent model from Forgeworld is cheaper (or at least no more expensive) than the GW model for me.

For me, its only worth getting parts that GW doesn't make for kits, such as autocannon dreadnought arms. Or better kits for kits that GW does make, like chaos dreads. Other than that, the big stuff just doesn't appeal.

I have never regretted anything I have bought from Forgeworld. I'd say that only a quarter of it has ever been used in a game. Games aren't the point - they're really nice models and you can spend time on them and enjoy them for that without needing to play with them.

Don't forget to look at Forgeworld's range of GW kits.
I think the price hike has been applied, but for AU and NZ orders, you can probably get GW stuff through FW at proper GBP prices.

I have been very happy with Forge World products I have purchased, but they are expensive. They are definitely not for the starting army builder/new player. At that stage the money can definitely be spent on much better items than high priced display pieces. At this point, getting divorced, I now find myself with a lot more disposable income and have been adding a bunch of different forge world items to my armies. At this stage my long term chaos armies are pretty much complete barring adding any new units with a new codex that are interesting. So adding in some forge world pieces is adding character to the armies and also giving me stuff to spend my money on (like I REALLY need that... Hahahaha).

The only model I had that was a problem was the chaos fighter that I bought for 40k that was totally warped. I can still use it, but can't really fix it...Given how much I've bought in the past year that isn't a bad track record.

Of course YMMWV and if you think they are overpriced don't buy them. They definitely aren't cheap, that is for sure. Can't argue that point without looking like a moron. I do only go so high in my purchase level, though. I think things like the titans, especially the reaver titan, are just ludicrously expensive and I can't bring myself to buy them. To avoid excessive shipping costs I just buy in bulk from FW and save up my desires and some cash and then spend 250 UK pounds. Shipping is free then, and I've also found if I order a big order like that I get my items a lot faster too, than if I only spend 50.

Ultimately it depends what you want from the models. If you want some really cool and highly detailed and unique pieces for your army and are willing to pay for it then forge world is a good route to go.

This entire hobby is prohibitively expensive if you don't think it is worth it. Case in point, I bought a dreadknight last night to make a one off joke conversion to a deff dredd. That 60 bucks may not be worth it to some, and just plain ludacris to others, but to me it is worth it.

The same applies to FW; if you like the model, want to paint it/wash it/smash with a hammer, and the price is right for you, go for it.

I fall back to my philosophy on hobbies here: If you are not enjoying buying/painting/playing/, then why are you doing it? So many of us have horrible jobs, spend the money on something that is worth it to you.

Some of the models look really cool, but the prices, and regular GW pricing for that matter, are way overpriced. But YMMV

The only Forge World thing I've gotten was a dreadnought twin-linked heavy bolter right arm. It's a nice piece, even though I didn't know why the ammo feeds kept falling off. In my defense, I was only a couple of years into 40k at the time, and didn't know what resin was, so I thought it was a plastic piece, so I used plastic glue on them. I'd gotten the piece at the bits shop at the Toronto Grand Tournament, along with a nifty power sword and a cool metal jump pack.
