I think that the majority of post edits are done in order to correct spelling/grammar mistakes. Even though preview post exists, it is still possible for people to miss something. Most of these edits will be done within a few moments of posting.

I think it is unnecessary to have an edit warning for these type of edits. I hate when I have to edit a posts, because having an edit warning is like having an ugly scar on your post. If the mistake is small sometimes I will just choose to leave it rather than make an even more noticeable correction.

The only time an edit warning is really important is for when someone has already been quoted, or has been responded to, and then goes back and changes what they said to pretend that they never said what they said (if that makes sense?).

For this reason I always prefer the system where the edit warning only appears if someone else has already replied in the topic. Would anyone else like this on Dakka?

I feel the same annoyance, but ultimately it is there to give a clear signal to mods if someone may have posted some big offensive picture, then edited it out moments later. Having one consistent message no matter what the circumstance is also nice and clear, and everybody knows that edits are mostly to correct spelling/links/etc so they are perhaps more likely to appreciate your input and effort knowing that you cared enough to correct things.

Thanks Legoburner for replying.

I guess if it is necessary for mods then it should stay. My only question then would be if is it necessary for it to be so loud?

Having it in white and italics makes it rather unmissable, even for people who aren't looking for (or don't care to see it).

A different colour or even having it align right, or pretty much anywhere else on the page, would make it slightly less intrusive, while still easy to spot for people who are interested in it.

I've tried a few variations over the years but nothing worked as it either hid it too well, or just draws attention to itself from being different.

Would a compromise be to only have the edit warnings appear if the edit was done more than 5 minutes after the original post time?

This gives people time to correct any spellings or rethink anything that may have been posted in the heat of the moment.

Nope, we do get mod alerts about junk that gets edited away shortly after the original posting and it would just lead to potential confusion on our end.

Have sometimes spotted grammatical/spelling/typos after 5mins and have been known to make several in succession

It doesn't bother me imasmuch as if I edit for reasons of correction to a PoV for instance I will say so
Otherwise I assume it will be realised that most edits are for typos. That is how I tend to see it in other peoples' posts.

If it bothers you Smacks, just say, "Edited for typos" or some such.

Would have to say this is a fairly pointless grievance. Are you so insecure that you dont want people to know you've made a spelling error?

I can see why the edit thing exists, it is there for good reason. Be glad that you can even edit your posts.

I would have to say that your post and your attitude is fairly pointless.

It isn't a grievance, it is a suggestion, on an area of the forum that is for suggestions. Are you so insecure that you need to personally attack people on Dakka forums for making suggestions on how they think the site could be improved? On an area of the board which invites people to do just that?

Dakka is not the only forum I post on, all of them allow you to edit your post, different forums have different systems for handling edit notification.

This was not a complaint. I was not criticising Legoburner for not doing things the way I suggest. I greatly appreciate everything that Legoburner has done with Dakka. Dakka does many things better than any other forums that I post on. I 'personally' don't think it does edit notifications better.

I made this suggestion because it is something that bothers me quite frequently on dakka, especially when I use the quick reply feature. If I then have to edit my post it will usually turn into 2 edits. The first one to fix the mistake, the second one the add a returns space between the end of my last paragraph and the automatically appended message, to show that they are separate paragraphs. I personally would rather that my post was not appended at all, on many other forums it wouldn't be. This because edit notification is handled differently.

I was invited to make a suggestion, I made a suggestion, I made it politely, and I tried to make a good case for why I think it would be an improvement. It was kind of Legoburner to hear me out, and take time out to reply so quickly to my post. I thanked him for his reply. If my suggestion is not something that he is interested in, then that is his decision, I will happily respect that, and have no wish to argue it further. Perhaps it is something he might consider again in the future.

How about a time stamp for the edits? That would seem to best solution for all the various issues.

Oh, they already have that. Nevermind.
