I like the list. You've got good enough shooting with the TMC's and nobody will be thrilled to see 27 Ymgarls coming out of every which way. I have played an all reserve Bug list for a while and you are right, turn 2 is like Christmas.

Correct me if I am wrong but it seemed your Ymgarls had T5 during an opponents shooting phase. Am I reading it wrong or did this happen? I ask because for a long time I played my Ymgarls had their morphed T5 until the next assault phase, however a closer reading of the rule on page 61 states they have their morphed ability until the end of the assault phase. So they just get T5 for a single assault phase and nothing for anybodies shooting phase.

You know you're totally right and I was playing it wrong this whole time. Idk why i thought it lasted through until the next assault phase.

I still really like the list.

Ymgarls are proving to be full of win. Just a suggestion though. Ever considered the dynamic duo of Swarmy and a flyrant? While the flyrant is quite fragile, the +2 on reserves with re-rolls to outflanking is pretty good and you can leave the flyrant in reserves to deepstrike as well as give the ymgarls Shadows coverage. The Swarmlord may be slow, but once he arrives, he will wreck house, especially after your opponent depletes himself from fighting the rest of your army. Now I wouldn't recommend this for anything but at the Ard Boyz level, but it's something you can experiment with for the future. But it works best for an all-reserves Tyranid army and ymgarls/outflankers wouldn't care about Warp Quake.

Also, next time you fight against Chaos, you should ask your opponent to bring a dual-lash list. That's a whole different monster from this one and a lot harder to deal with.

I nearly tabled a dual lash list last week with the same list. Batrep is in the blog and here on dakka.

Well played in deployment with the 'nids. I think one advantage this Tyranid build has is it plays much differently than most. Also, statistically getting 2/3 of your outflankers on your preferred side is what you should expect.

Not to take anything away from the Dual Lash player, but imo they played a terrible game with that list that day. IIRC the two lashes were tied up in CC on Turn 2 (maybe one waited until turn 3) which made it more like a game against two DP's and some PM.

Terrible game or out-played? My list will out-shoot 6 oblits all day. Everything else functions at 24" and has to come to me. Right ino the ymgarl traps. My opponent set up and defined the terrain before we traded lists. With 6 pieces of area terrain and forced to come to me, I was getting those princes either way.

tbh, your list is quite nice, and refreshing to see,

the opponents list was crap, no utter crap, it lacked focus and staying power, even then some major mistakes he made was the deployment of his oblits, Abbadon had to be in the raider...

While some may agree with you, my opponent this game is a hobbyist. When he collects an army he does so from a variety of codex choices. He likes to paint and has won best appearance at several of our RTTs. Ardboyz may be a competitive event, but not everyone attending will have the funds or desire to collect everything in triplicate.

It may not be the most hardcore competitive list, but represents the meta in my area which is well known for hobbyists, collectors, fluff, and comp fans. We had a great game and chuckled the whole way through it.

I rarely criticize my opponent's lists or choices during the game because I want my blog to focus on tyranid play and tactics. We all face a variety of armies and need to know how to handle all comers no matter how diverse or spammy.

I hope that you enjoyed the read for the painted armies and nice terrain even if you don't approve of the lists.

Kevin is a great guy and fun to play against. If you are looking for an optimized CSM list, he is not the one to field it. Also, it is always fun to play his army, Hyv3 is right too in that the pictures do not do his army justice. It is absolutely beautiful, one of the best painted/themed armies I have seen.

Yea I was thinking that those pics didn't do him justice...

And just to back up Hiv3mind, dual lash DP will/should go down to the ymgarls if the nid player is playing them right, I took down an avatar with 5 ymgarls the other day in a practice game...and it goes without saying that the Avatar outshines the current DP in Codex CSM...

Great list, I am playing a pod assault list with 15 ymgarls (10 and 5) and three 15 gene stealer pods with the DoM also poding in, it also sports a flyrant with hive commander and trygon prime, its makes for a bloody turns 2 and 3...

I've got one thing to say aside from this: your reports rock! The thing is that even though I'm speaking of pretty marginal cases, you have to remember that you _must_ morph every assault phase, meaning that you have to plan 1 player turn earlier which altered form you are not going to use next turn. It can cause some problems but as I said, they're marginal (never has hurt my decision making).

Sorry to offend you on that, just trying to be constructive altough the language was a bit harsh. Tbh i had a great read, and the blog is one where i do learn a lot about Nid tactics, although i don't play them (yet).

I can understand people are in for the hobby, but still if you play that big lists you need to have the bare minimum of strategy and list.

No offense taken at all, I have played with Kevin before and I thought it would be useful to understand what he thinks about when it comes to building lists and painting armies.

I do agree with your assessment that he made some mistakes in that game, what is really interesting is Kevin started painting because he enjoyed it and picked up playing later. He is always fun to play and continues to evolve as a player.
