I want to start a GK army with a lot of dreadknights (2-3 depending on point size), but before I build it I want to know if they are a viable option in a competitive enviroment. I look to you dakkanauts for help...

Word is that they're not great for shooting, while they're good for close combat. They're sure as hell durable, but you'll want to keep them supported in the same way as a walker; while they're T7 and have a 2+ save, they could still in theory get dragged down by a lot of attacks. Dark Eldar will destroy them, if that's a concern of yours.

I have played 4 games with mine an each has been a disaster....not even able to kill termagants with 2x doom fist quick enough...sad. Another time I lost him to invul saves in shooting. Another he got his but kicked 1v1 mestiphon ba hq. And last but not least he sat an twiddled his thumbs not once made his points back...not even with a surprise shunt move.

For what they do they aren't that great. You cant kill squads quick enough as stated above. the FAQ made the doom fists horrible. The 5++ make them VERY vulnerable to power weapons, plasma and other I ignore your 2+ save weapons. The guns they can take are very good though. I think if they had a 4++ or were cheaper they would be worth it.

I don't want to believe this! There has to be someone out there with some sort of success with these monsters!

My buddy uses one to ok success. He uses the sword, the pie plate and the h12. Though they are rather easy to lock in combat because of their low number of attacks. Neck, everytime i see it, i just throw a unit of wyches at it and most of the time i kill it or lock it in combat for 3+ turns.
Its still a great tool. You just need to know it's limitations.

I agree, they definitely have their limitations. To me, at first glance they seemed like powerhouses that would wreck face anywhere on the table. However, after review they seem like support units. One, huge, durable support unit.
I like the idea of running Mordrak/Ghost Knights and a Librarian with the NDKs DSing in behind them making use of the Librarians teleport homer to unleash plenty of firepower. Sucessfully casting Sanctuary will help keep the NDKs out of combat to keep them firing away.
The floor is up for debate.

Guarded Grey Knight Terminator

It's primarily optimized for hunting monstrous creatures and multiwound elites. It has an element of mobility that's rare in the GK codex if it takes a teleporter but it gets very expensive to become a generalist unit. It's only good at opening vehicles in CC, so against mech it has to expose itself to a lot of fire. A teleporter and a hammer let it pretty much automatically damage any vehicles it decides to go after, but is already approaching the price tag of a Land Raider at this point. No matter how focused on CC it is, it's never able to handle many melee units well, and no matter how shooting-focused it becomes, it's still stuck with the 24" range and thus brings nothing new to the army.
As it stands, the Dreadknight doesn't do quite enough, or do it quite efficiently enough, to be much good in an all-comers list, and competes with TLAC Dreadnoughts in the Heavy slot. As a large model MC with only 5++ and W4, it's more fragile than it looks.

the only viable build i belive is Incinerator and teliporter. otherwise they are too expensive.
the Teliporter is almost mandatory to make them decent. otherwise they are hoofing it accross the board too slow.
the psycannon sucks. a large blast is ok, but the psycannon is best against vehicles and Str7 rending supports this. but 1/2 str against vehicles is pretty bad for it. it it has been along the lines of the psylincer and simply had more shots it would have been decent. its also hidiously expensive.
the incinerator is fairly cheap and gives you a ranged template.

I like it now more than I did when it came out. It grew on me in the same way the Stormraven did, but neither are my favorite models.

The stormraven is actually my favortie model in my army, because I got to custimize my base, and also do mural work on it. O an bring the nerd rage fellas! lol I am a nerd bully lol j/k Yeah the dreadknight looks fantastic imo, maybe not 100% how it should have been...but looks sweet. Esp with a good paint job on it.
As far as how good it is....guh As of now its a waste of points LOL. Counts as dreadnought anyone lol.
