In case you aren't familiar, the default look for the brass scorpion is as follows:

I'm wondering what the best way to achieve the red plating is. One idea I've had is to use those 4 paint systems for painting cars a candy apple color. I've used that on my guitar before and it basically involves a grey primer, a silver base coat layer that adds the shimmer, then the desired candy color coat (apple red for this one), and lastly a finishing clear coat layer. http://duplicolor.com/products/psCandyCoat/

The key thing I want to accomplish is I want the panels to look like solid pieces. I will most likely learn how to use an airbrush for this project if I don't use the candy spray system, but any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

That finish is definitely airbrushed. Red over black.

And hand paint the brass trim afterwards you think?

If your looking for an easy way to paint "candy" metallic colors I would look into the Alclad II painting system;

http://www.alclad2.com/index.html

I achieved a similar result on this model gas tank;

It was based w/ GM Gun Metal, then several airbrushed layers of Tamyia "Clear Red" then coated with several layers of Future, followed by a good waxing and buffing. IN retrospect I should have gone with the Alclad II system.

And I would strongly disagree about that red simply being airbrushed over black, There is some metallic at work there.
