Alright, here is the deal. I would like to keep playing fantasy, but I want a low model count army. Ogres I have been told are the lowest you can get, but I don't want to start ANOTHER army. I like some of the WoC units (Warriors, Knights), but the model count would start to grow if I kept that. But then I remembered the troll army. You take Throgg and Trolls become a core choice. Having played 2 games of fantasy, I don't know much yet, but I think 2 5 man blocks of trolls as a core choice (At 45 points a pop!), Throgg as my hero, a socceror and some warriors would not be a bad army. (At 1000 points).

So what dose dakka think of the Troll army. Not mine in particular, but the idea in general.

Cant really play warhammer on a super low model count except for ogres. Main problem with trolls is the stupidity rules means that in order to have any sembelnce of control over the unit its must stay within the command bubble of your BSB and genral limiting its tactics to a "smash em bro" straight up charge towards the enemys line.

Yes, and Trolls have terrible terrible Ld. Hence why Jubear noted keeping them close to BSB and General.

Well, then I am DEFINITELY doing this army, as Throgg lets all trolls use his leadership of 8. So, now this doesn't look to bad at all.

Yes. However, Throgg can throw his Ld at units even if he is not the general. So, you make someone else the general and you have 2 Ld bubbles floating around.

Okay, so Throgg + A another hero (The army general) in the units of trolls + Some Knights would be a playable army?

Dude if you go trolls go with dragon ogres with AHW as support so awesome add a lord on jugger as well maybe a hellcannon to go along with beasties.

I was thinking it would be a fun army that was still playable. Sure, I might not win a lot, but it is different. I am currently looking at paying 220 dollars for this army, but I think it has a lot of modeling potential, and would be a lot of fun to fight people with. It's like Ogre troops meet WoC magic!

But ya those guys actually do quite well from what I have seen people usually dont have a way to counter such strong tough troops with so many wounds.

The guy who I would mainly play is going to play brets, and it would be a fun "theme" fight too. Throgg also looks to be a MONSTER (No pun intended) in combat. I am sure Ogres hit harder, but trolls have more wounds, I believe a higher T and regeneration.

Well, at 1000 points I think the troll army will do well. At higher point levels, I might buff out the trolls to 2 ranks of 5 (or 2 of 4) and add more "squads", as the trolls are the core part of the army.

If you run Throgg I would say troll horde is funny and no one sees it coming until after it gets hit by that unit like a train.

Plus they can vomit an extra rank with throgg cant they? Just keep a BSB nearby so they can reroll on that stupidity test.

I saw a fairly interesting Troll army once. it was 3k points though.

it had Galrauch as the General and main caster(18" ld bubble), Throgg, a BSB on a Deamonic Steed of some kind, and about 50 trolls in 3 units.

Ok still Throgg plus horde of trolls first of sounds funny and second will eat a lot of little people and for his points so worth it.

How is your army going to react to horded units? Any army with access to cheap infanty is just gooing to tarpit your troll units.

I am 100% sure that an all troll army would not be very effective on the table, however it would look cool and I think I remember the OP is mainly playing brets so he dosent really need to bring a good army to beat down those poor buggers.

That is true, I might add some actual WoC to fight hordes, but I do think the Troll army would be fun to play. All monsters, so Trolls, Dargon Ogres, Giants and Shaggoths would be something unique.

Trolls can destroy hordes the puke attacks help a lot and the matter of how many wounds they have and all.

They really do alright unless you are playing against cheese and hey why not throw in a lord on a jugger in the main unit of trolls so thats quite a few high str high ws and high initiative attacks.

Puke attacks don't do well against hordes, they arn't breath weapons. Only Throgg has a breath weapon.

its 1 str5 hit per troll in BtB with an enemy model(kinda like stomp) that disallows armor. its actually better against small units of elite troops.

The problem with trolls at that low points is your list will look something like this
Naked Chaos Lord (bad idea)
Throgg
6 trolls
6 trolls


That is a total of 14 models....not a good idea in 8th

well, Throgg can be your general and you can spend the Lords points on another unit of trolls.

infact, you have to because there is a 3 unit minimum rule(stupid one, but its there nontheless)

I didn't buy a copy of 8th yet, so forgive me if the rules changed, but nowhere in Throgg's rules does it say he takes stupidity away from his unit. His unit has stupidity, so unless 8th edition says that characters without it remove it from their unit, Throgg's unit still suffers from it-as does Throgg, as long as he remains with the unit.

Hmm, I could have sworn his rules made them no longer stupid.

Regardless, they use his Ld8 so they are better off then previously.
