Accourding to the various marine codex FAQ's, large squads (too many to transport) are able to buy rhinos or razorbacks (Chaos codex exmaple):

Q. Can a unit numbering more than 10 models still
take a Rhino as a dedicated transport, even though it
cannot embark?
A. Yes, as the squad might drop to 10 models or less
during the game.

My question is, using this logic, can't EVERY army thus buy their dedicated transports for large squads? It kind of pisses me off that the ork codex days "Mobs numbering 12 or less may buy a trukk" (presumably because 13 orks can't fit in a trukk). Yet those Imperial Candy-asses can buy one 'just in case we get shot up'. I'd like to buy a trukk or two for those 30-ork mobs for contesting purpsoes....

That's a clarification, as there is no requirement in the Space Marine Codices that the unit has to be a certain size in order to buy the transport.

In CSM in particular, note that the condition of 10 or less does actually appear for Khorne Berzerkers, and not for any other Troops choice that can exceed 10.

For example, even with that FAQ Khorne Berserkers can't buy a Rhino if they number more than 10. Their Dedicated Transport options starts with "If it numbers 10 or less models, the squad may ...". By contrast, the Thousand Sons entry on the same page simply says "The squad may..." without restriction. Thus a squad of 20 Thousand Sons may buy a Rhino, but a squad of 20 Khorne Berserkers may not.

If the option to buy a transport is there, then you can always buy it, you just can't always fit in it. Dedicated transports allow you to start with the unit that it was purchased for inside at the start of the game, otherwise it's a normal transport.

That is not always correct. As has been pointed out many codex entries will contain a restriction establishing the maximum size the unit can be and still purchase the dedicated transport.

I believe this exact question came up in a FAQ and the answer was yes, the unit can buy the transport, but that purchase doesn't allow, say, a ten man tactical squad to fit in a Razorback.

The point is that just because space marines can do it does not mean everyone can do it.

This exact question came up for Space Marines because their army list entries have no unit size limit on their Transport options. This doesn't apply to everyone else, since other codexes do limit transports to units under set sizes.

If your unit entry has a specific size listed, then you have to abide by it. If it doesn't, then you are probably ok.

It is mostly older codices that have these restrictions.

they will likely go away when the books are updated, but until then the restrictions are still up.

the main reason the SM codex has dropped the restrictions is because of Combat Squads. a 10 man squad that buys a razorback can still fit in it if they split(of course, only one of the new squads can fit in)

Until other armies can combat squad their units, don't expect the transport limitations to be lifted. It makes perfect sense that a tactical squad that plans on combat squading can take a razorback for half of the squad to ride in.

As pointed out earlier, Chaos Space Marines would be in a genre between limited and unlimited.

So it would be like this:

Limited: Black Templars, Dark Eldar, Eldar, Tyranids

Partially limited: Orks?, Chaos Space Marines

Unlimited: Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Grey Knights, Imperial Guard, Space Marines, Space Wolves

Ork Nobz don't have a restriction because the max unit size is 10, and the smallest capacity for an ork vehicle is 12 There is no need to restrict them.
