i need some clarification here.. okay so i posted a thread a while back about army updates and im still not sure so i have a question that needs answered

is it safe right now to go and build say a 1500 point eldar army? because, eldar are slightly outdated and how do we know when they're gonna get a codex update? the thing is i dont want to go and blow $200 on a new army if it's just gonna be updated next week and my models will be the old versions.
help?

Yeah, it's safe. Never going to be any guarantees, but reliable rumour sources haven't pegged an Eldar release any time soon.

In which case it's not safe because he/she is concerned about buying models which will become outdated.

okay, thanks but what happens when there is a release? do the models completely change? or do they just add models?

They will change a few of the models but the old models will still be usable.

They just add models. Your old ones will still be usable, even if new versions come out. It's rare that a unit is completely removed from an army, especially an Eldar army.

whatwhat, I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at there. It's safer if Eldar are less likely to get a release soon, and models never become truly obsolete. Unless they're squats.

Yeh. Sorry I misread your first statement as have instead of haven't.

As I understand it the models wont be obsolete, but with a new codex your army list may / will change due to new points costs and such.

There won't be new eldar until at least 2013.
Even if a new codex did come out, all your models will be usable. The only model that I can think off the top of my head that became outdated and unusable in the last decade were chaos cultists.

if your really concerned about this keep to thing that were released with the last codex. The falcom/wave serpent kit i dont think will change nor the basic guardians or the more recent plastic walkers. The Phoniex lords however date back to the early 90s and are due a new sculpt.

None of the models will become unusable.

the only thing that usually happens i they take an old set and remake it.

Like Banshees and Striking Scorpions will likely become a plastic or finecast set of 5 rather then the blister they are now.

this won't make your old models unusable. infact, many people find it cool to have old versions of models.

having the old models also lessens your accusations of just playing a codex because its too powerful. Like my Metal GKs protect me from all the GK hate going around, I deserve the cheese

Eldar are a particularly safe bet, their army list has gone essentially unchanged since 1990 - there are even a few models from the Rogue Trader era that are still part of the current Eldar range.

It depends on what your definition of safe is.

If you like the models on an aesthetic level then I would say "buy them."

If you are just buying them because they will make a good list, I would say wait.

Two more years until 2013 when a new Eldar codex will MAYBE be released? That's pretty pointless. I think two years is amply enough time to build a good list.

Okay i will revise:

Buy the models you like on an aesthetic level then Use them as counts as until the eldar get a codex release.

I use models from the 1st edition of 40k back in the 80s in my Space Marine army. Don't ever worry about models becoming obsolete. As a general rule of thumb for Eldar - if it's plastic, they won't be making a new kit of it. When Eldar do get a new codex down the road, I can see them creating a new unit or two and making one of the aspect warriors plastic. Even so, the current sculpts are great and you'll do fine with them.

GW, in general, doesn't invalidate models. certain items of wargear may disappear, but there is always counts as for weapons that got squatted.

and speaking of Squats, most people use them as Counts as IG now days.

Except for my Death Company, that I used to have in every army because of how 4th ed was set up, and now they are used as Vanguard Veterans, since the DC are nice but very easily led astray.
