So tomorrow will be my first game ever with tau, against my friend who will try
out guard and I thought about using a list like this:

Shas'o, TL burstcannon, airburst frag, HW multitracker, failsafe detonator (for the lols) - 127

2xFireknife - 124

12xFire Warrior - 120

12xFire Warrior - 120

12xFire Warrior, devilfish - 200

5xPathfinder, devilfish - 140

2xBroadside, Targeting array, 160

Not meant to be competitive, moreso fun, but anything can be changed since the battle will be
fought by proxying. Any comments are appreciated

EDIT: weirdest idea ever.... feth seriousness!

Shas'o, Iridium armour, stimulant injector, command and control node, vectored retro-thrusters, positonal relay, failsafe detonator, ejection system - 170

2 bodyguards, ASS, 2 marker drones, shield generator - 250

ethereal - 50

6 fire warriors, pulse carbines - 60

10 kroot carnivores, 3 hounds - 88

10 vespid - 160

10 vespid - 160

10 vespid - 160

This should never be used, it will never win... just a stupid idea.

In Beil-Tan High Command, plotting the destruction of the Mon-Keigh.

Sounds like a Fun list to play and to play against. can't see any major problems with it except maybe the 12 in the devilfish could have the carbines instead for some close up guard killing.

However I'm not a Tau player and so maybe Someone else could help more but thats what i think.

Hope this helps

Drop the 'O to 'El, add Target Array. Saves points.
EnormousName wrote:12xFire Warrior, devilfish -
Tau have the DisPod, which grants a much needed Cover Save for vehicles. Add it on every vehicle.

EnormousName wrote:2xBroadside, Targeting array,
B-sides really ought to have Shield Drones to extend their life. So, Team Leader, hwDrone controler, BK, and Target Array or A.s.s.

Waaay over equipped, even for fun.

EnormousName wrote:2 bodyguards, ASS, 2 marker drones, shield generator - 250
Shield Gens cost more than Shield Drones, and usually mean a 50/50% of dying from Instant Death as a suit will need the Invuln versus MLs, LasCans, Pfists or meltas and they're gonna instanta-squish 'em. Better that a frisbee risks it.

EnormousName wrote:ethereal -
For so many reasons, don't field an ethereal.

EnormousName wrote:6 fire warriors, pulse carbines - 60
Without MarkerLights to help with pinning, the PulseRifle is the superior gun.
EnormousName wrote:10 kroot carnivores, 3 hounds - 88
Fire Warriors are a mandatory unit to be taken ... but for fun, having only one troop is okay.

Well, you've asserted your own, accurate criticism on list #2.

Not helpful. Both list have serious competitive issues. The second is not even legal.

While everyone is entitled to an opinion, some should not speak up when the opinion is largely uninformed.

So far, I've found that firewarriors supported by markerlights (I prefer marker drones and stealth marker teams, others prefer pathfinders - YMMV) can be very effective. The Hammerhead Tank is another great unit - it's railgun's ability to take on hoards AND high AV vehicles is great, especially in low point games.

Here are some other pointers to remember:
* You need at least 1 HQ
* You need at least 1 firewarrior troop.
* The following units are largely viewed as inferior: vespids, sniper drones, skyrays, ethereals.
* The following units are so awesome that they are basically indespensible: Crisis suits, Broadside suits, shield drones.
* The following upgrades are incredibly awesome: sensor spines, disruption pods, battlesuit multi-trackers, vehicle multi-trackers, bonding knives

As far as your second list, it looks like you need to reread the codex and pay closer attention. I don't judge - I made lots of dumb mistakes with my earliest lists, too. Consider, for example, that a positional relay is only helpful in armies where you will be holding a lot in reserve, command and control node doesn't do anything in the new rules set, vectored retro-thrusters don't work unless the unit is a monat, and putting a failsafe detonator on your shas'o is a waste (why should your HQ kill himself to protect his bodyguards?).

I could go into it more, but... I really think you should reread the codex start to finish and make sure you understand the use and utility of each unit and piece of wargear.

Finally, check out Advanced Tau Tactica, a webforum dedicated to all things Tau. They have tactica for every unit in the Tau codex, which really comes in handy for new players.

When combined with a good grasp of the codex. Which you really need to work on.

Thanks for the comments! So I will drop the 'o to 'el and give targeting array,
get shield drones for broadsides and get dpods for the fish...
And I am not removing the failsafe, it's there for fun, not to be effective!

For the competitive issues, we play for fun so the ultimate list is not really
needed, however stupid mistakes are nice to get corrected, show me you care
And yes the second list was just me thinking how bad a list could be, by
the way how is it illegal? o.O

Out of curiosity, is your friend going with massed infantry blobs, or Mech. Guard?

I have no idea, but I expect a lot of infantry, probably backed up by a LRBT.
But then again, I'm just guessing.

When I first looked at it, it did not have any Fire Warriors. They are a compulsory, must take unit, like the HQ Crisis Suit. But you now have FWs there so, it's okay.
