I rather slyly build a giant gold creeper filled with TNT accompanied by a sign saying "SSSSSSS" on a friends server that he left on overnight
The next day he came on and we were going about business as usual when I snuck off to the top of it and told him to come look at what I found, his screams over the mic as I detonated several stacks of TNT were delightful.

I so want to try out multiplayer, but that will have to wait until after I've gotten enough money to purchase Homefront, then further later from that, when I've gotten enough money to also purchase Minecraft. You think that's bad. There was an admin who had everyone who died or logged in suddenly spawn on an island made of a "cup" of obsidian. Then used a command to create a layer of lava above them, slowly falling down onto them. It was hilarious in hindsight.

No idea for the updates but have fun digging out the entire bottom of the world. I think it was said that each world is 8 times the size of Earth and would take 13 years to walk from the center to the edge. Finding that out saved me a bunch of trouble while exploring.

So, any chance of a Dakka SMP server?
My castle progresses.
The old central keep will be getting bulldozed once I have the walls completely spider proof, still need three of the four towers to get their projecting wall and crenelations. Once that's done I level the original fort and start on a new one.

I get that the point is to build things. It's just when people say 'I built a tower of TNT' did you actually mine all the sand and kill all the creepers to get the sulphur or did you invedit to get it? I guess it could be fun with cheats but having had to dig out the stuff makes it more rewarding.

Doing random crap like that I'd say Invedit. No sane person would gather the 20k TNT to create a castle of the stuff legitimately.

Minecraft much more fun when you play it without cheats, the exception to this is TNT.

For TNT legally build a mob farm. You're not going to get 20,000 TNT any time soon to build your fortress but it can give you enough sulfur to play around with.
I've shied away from SMP so far for lack of anyone I know to play with. I'm not really interested in playing on an open server and having to deal with griefers.

Try exploring some naturally forming caves if you have difficulty finding resources while mining. They'll usually have more at the cost of the safety of creating your own mine. After that all you need is patience.

Because it seems that I have to excavate huge landmasses to find anything. Natural caves are stuffed with mobs and require large-scale excavation themselves to yield anything more than a few blocks of iron and lots of coal.
Mossy cobblestone is rare and there isn't enough of it to be of much use, gold is pointless unless you can make blocks, and that takes loads, i've had enough diamond over 5 worlds to count on my fingers, iron seems to be strangely rare on all my worlds. The only other thing I find a lot of is redstone, but i'm useless with circuitry.
Also, it's one thing to make a castle out of sand, dirt and cobblestone, but it's another to make it and like it. Most of my structures are smooth stone, mossy cobblestone, iron and obsidian; iron is particularly nice and the amount i've used thus far has been about 20x the amount i've found naturally over all my worlds.

You shouldn't have any trouble finding iron and so long as you're willing to haul lava up a bucket at a time it's not hard to get obsidian. The key is to mine where the materials actually are and when it comes to obsidian, diamond, and such that's withing 20 to 30 levels of bedrock. A couple pages back I posted my optimal mining pattern. Following that I've churned out a ton of materials. I've racked up 30 diamonds in the course of about two hours of bedrock level mining.
The thing is most of what you're posting up is not stuff you can really use for mass building.
Mossy cobblestone is limited to dungeons and in the grand scale of construction the amount you get out of a dungeon ain't all that much. I've been playing this game for a couple weeks and have never even found a dungeon. Iron takes 9 ingots to make a single block. Obsidian requires either getting lucky underground and finding a place where lava and water meet or making it yourself. At fifteen seconds with a diamond pickaxe to mine I think it's safe to say you were never intended to get your hands on mass amounts of the stuff.
You're essentially saying you want to either build your structures out of some of the rarest materials in the game or the most labor intensive.

You could look at it that way, or you could look at it this way; I want to build my structures out of the materials that appeal to me.
Both statements are true, however one of them portrays me in a negative way due to its wording.

It's negative if you want to take it that way. The assertion is 100% accurate. The only super rare material you haven't expressed an interest in is clay. So you're left with either just accepting the rarity and going looking for it anyways or Invedit.
I agree that things like smoothstone, obsidian, iron blocks, etc. are all great looking building materials. Believe me, the first dungeon I actually find is being ripped apart for the mats because I want that mossy cobblestone to make ivy covered walls for my castle. That said I think the rarity makes the things you do assemble out of them the most interesting. If you go into my cobblestone castle but then see my cast in place obsidian throne or my diamond bathtub or a golden chandalier I think it's more impressive because of the time and effort required to get your hands on the stuff to make it. Sure, an entirely obsidian castle does sound kind of cool but when you start making entire buildings out of it loses some of its luster.
Now if you want a negative comment if you going to just Invedit yourself to happiness save yourself the $20 and just go play Classic. There's no point in paying for the game if you're not going to play half of it.

Nice thing about Cartographer is that it also spits out info on how many resources you have. I think that in the total area I've explored there are just about 9,400 diamonds. There's 1,900 clay.
Now when I find clay I find a lot, but I've only found it twice. I've got enough to make enough bricks to build an outhouse and that's about it.
