This scenario has come up a few times now between my Chaos Daemons versus my friends Orks where a unit of my daemons surrounds one of his Ork transport vehicles and assaults it. We both agree on if the vehicle is wrecked and my models surround it there is nowhere for the passengers to disembark from and they are destroyed. The disagreement comes from if the vehicle is destroyed he claims he can place his models under the foot print of where the vehicle was and often saves the unit (the Ork Battlewagon has a large enough foot print to do this). On page 67 of the LBB says for a Destroyed explosion “the surviving passengers are placed where the vehicle used to be and then take a Pinning test”. RAW it seems correct but it just seems bizarre that when surrounded your best chance of survival is your vehicle explodes.

Yes, when the vehicle is exploded, the unit within is placed in the vehicles footprint, which happens to be a piece of terrain now. You still must be 1 inch from the enemy while doing so, and any models that cannot be placed due to this are destroyed.

On the battlefield, in that dark corner you forgot to check.

I believe your friend is correct, though I'd add the caveat that models being placed from a vehicle so destroyed would need to be at least 1" from an enemy model (consistent with the stipulation on BRB p. 11) or be destroyed.

(I don't have any immediate backup for this assertion, though I'm someone will shortly come along and either provide one or refute this.)

Both juraigamer and sgrunt are completely correct. In the aformentioned scenario a vehicle "explodes" result is actually preferable to a vehicle "wrecked" result because it will result in the unit being able to be placed inside the vehicles "footprint". The only thing to keep in mind is that, like juraigamer said, the enemy models must remain 1" from your own models which are surrounding the vehicle. A squad of 10 Nobz may be able to do this, but a squad of 30 Boyz sure as heck won't!

Thanks for the replies I did some measurements on his Battlewagon it is about 2.5 inches wide and the rear is about 3.5 inches and 6 inches in length. Models in base to base with the vehicle and their 1” buffer means there should only be enough room for 1 or 2 infantry 25mm base models to survive in the rear depending on how my models are placed and there is not enough room for the Warboss on the 40mm monster base at any point for him to survive.

The official battlewagon should be a bit wider than that, if also doesn't get smaller or wider anywhere, the wheels line up with the tracks. Even with 1" space you should be able to fit two boyz next to each other or a warboss/bigmek.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.

Is he using an old gorkamorka style vehicle for his battlewagon?

In which case it is much smaller than it should be and more accuratly represents a trukk.

Google image search for various ork vehicles and see if you can identify what he's using!

Finally got to measure mine:

It should be 3" in the front, otherwise those measurements were correct(assuming no deff rolla). A 40mm base easily fits in the back of the crater plus about five more regular models if you completely surrounded it and none of your models died in the explosion. However, if you managed to surround that huge thing completely, you pretty much deserved it
