hi everyone. stegadon gets targetted by a pit of shades, what iniative do you use steg I1 or skinks I4 or do you roll on the stegs whose been hit then take test, same for pendulum do you roll for targetting or just take the test on highest iniative

Going to take a shot here and say since Pit of Shades is a template you take an I test on the steg, then an I test on each skink or Character that has been hit by the template.

Pendulum is resolved as a cannon bounce, so it would seem like the Steg takes the I test to avoid suffering the hit, and then any Skink or Character the line passes through would take the I test to avoid the hit.

At least thats how I would play it. I'm not sure if I'm overlooking something. But the Stegadon's Hit Randomization rules don't affect template style weapons as far as I can tell.

One test using the highest value.

This was argued a long time ago in regards to ridden monsters in general, and we reached the conlusion that nosferatu is right.

Not for pit of shades. ONE model has been hit by the pit.

Also templates do NOT HIT all of a stegadon, as the steg has *specific* rules on randomising ALL shooting.

from what the stegadon *specific* rule states. "missile hits and impact hits are randomised" nothing about non shooting template attacks.

Page 55 – Stegadons, Skink Crew
Change the third sentence to “Stegadons of both types are treated as a Ridden Monster with more than one rider, with the following additional rules.” (Emphasis mine)

Stegs follow all the rules that Ridden Monsters follow as well as the additional rules laid out on pg. 55 of the LM codex. The codex only states that missile hits and impact hits are randomized.

Ridden Monster rules on page 105 - Templates sub section
Both the riders and the mount are hit if the base is touched by the template (this includes cannonballs). A stone throwers higher strength hit will be randomly attributed to either mount or rider.

Now in the case of the Steg we have a way to overrule this if the steg is hit by a Cannonball or by a Stone Thrower. The Stegs additional rule is a contradiction to the normal rules for Riders and mounts, which means a cannonball will either hit the crew, or it will hit the Steg.

Under the Characteristics Tests heading on page 10, we are told that if a model has more than one value for the same characteristic, it is always taken against the highest of the values.

A steg functions no different than any other ridden monster when hit by a Pit of Shades or by a Purple Sun. Take 1 test, on the highest value of the model. Should the model fail, ALL parts of the model are removed from the game.

So Nos is mostly right in that it is 1 test, but if the model is hit by a template that wasn't a missile (ie. purple sun) then the entire model is hit, you just take 1 test on the highest value.
