I have always enjoyed the 40k novels. Though I admit they got a bit dry at times, the Horus Heresy series is a fantastic look into the history of the 41st millennium, and how the Imperium got to be the way it is today.

I've also heard that Gaunt's Ghosts is pretty good, though I haven't read any of them yet.

I wrote some fanfiction once...

It involved things not suited to this forum. No, it wasn't overly violent. Yes, it did involve Sisters of Battle. And furries. And Chaos. ^_^

I find the novels kind of boring and over the top. I generally avoid them. Plus I have plenty of other books to be reading (being in college). I'd rather be rolling dice.

I haven't read very many of the books that the Black Library has put out, but some of them are really good. The Space Wolves omnibus and the Gaunt's Ghost Series have been amazing so far. Unfortunately the Dawn of War Omnibus was a little dry. After you finish reading it you feel like you wasted your time and its not that great. SMurfs omnibus wasn't bad either, but it could have been much better.

I like most of the Guard novels I've read so far except for Redemption Corps. Both the Space Wolf Omnibuses are good, and I liked the Ravenor books.

Making my way through book one of the Tome of Fire series, cause Sallies are awesome. Not bad so far, but I found the Eve fiction to be better, namely the Empyrean Age.

As for the shorts in the fiction section, they're hit or miss. I will instantly stop reading if there are spelling, grammar, punctuation, or even basic capitalization errors. As such, a number of potentially good reads I avoid simply because the author didn't spell check.

There have been some really good short stories in the fiction section here though, sometimes you just have to dig a little.

Gaunt's Ghost is the best series I've read so far. Even the evil characters are likable.

I pretty much avoid fanfiction, regardless of what fandom it's set in. I mean yeah, we all sort of write a little when we write fluff about our armies, write up battle reports, and imagine the events in our heads, but we're not writing Love Can Bloom or any other reams of fanfiction there are.

Black Library books are pretty good. I read a lot of them since they're pretty light fare and they're fun. The quality of writing isn't always the best (Rynn's World, as much as I enjoyed it, was a proofreading nightmare with grammatical and spelling errors on every page) but as long as you avoid the worst of the worst they're enjoyable. Hell, I even like Gav Thorpe's writing as often as it gets lambasted on forums like these. Overall they're not the best books I've ever read, but they're in a familiar universe I've invested a lot of time into. I'm about to start the Night Lords novels and I'm pretty excited!
