I think once a plasma gun/ cannon overheats you should roll a dice and take hits and wounds on all within that radius, to symbolise the plasma exploding out of the gun and spraying the area with superheated plasma. Thoughts on this? Orkmoticon to tie the post together -

I'd say no.

Many people criticise Gets Hot! for being OTT, in that the overheating is simply the gun getting too hot - rather than maiming the user - most of the time ; let alone maiming a Space Marine. In layman's terms, it should be akin to the plasma pistol overheating on Halo, instead of it killing the user as it does in game. AFAIK at-least.

In game-terms/balance, few enough people use plasma weaponry as it is; typically being 3rd to meltas and flamers. I can see no reason to make plasma weapons even more undesirable IMHO, whilst they should really be the same price as a meltagun in most cases.

Personally, I wouldn't support this idea.

I see your point there

I think it would be more balanced if they just took a hit from their weapon, not it instantly killing them.

He, nice try. But then you would have people just packing padding on their plasma wielders. I think it should eliminate the guy holding it if anyone.

I dont get why gets hot! Rule still exists. Maybe back in 3rd when plasmaguns countered TEQ's hard, but now termis have crux terminus. theyre also priced higher then other special weps that DONT go blammo.

The worst is plasma pistols; expensive, only get a few chances to fire, and can kill the user. Making these weapons worse just makes them more counterintuitive to field.

Personally, I think Imperial Plasma Weapons should have extra range over their counterparts. 18" Plasma Pistols, 30" Plasma Guns, and 42" Plasma Cannons, since a Miniature Sun will fly pretty far, especially with the power to punch through Terminator Armor behind it.

I don't see the justification behind that. The power of the weapon is represented in its Str7, AP2; not its range. Also, where would this leave the much more sophisticated Eldar and Tau versions?

its already a weapon with a flaw, why make it worst, Right now it's a good soild str 7 range of weapons and awlays has been, if you make it almost instant kill or do something else slowed, people will drop them and favour melta even more.

I think they're pretty balanced, IMHO. The "Gets Hot!" rule is a way of balancing the differences and elements behind the fluff of each army AND the differences in play. Tau Plasma guns don't get hot, but are 1 Strength weaker (IIRC), and Space Marine weapons, while less sophisticated, are stronger, and able to hurt stronger units more effectively, but are more dangerous and riskier to use, as is represented by the "Gets Hot!" rule.

All in all, I like them the way they are.

Over the hills and far away.

An interesting idea to be sure, but why make a crap rule worse?

If you were playing home spun rules or playing something akin to those 'Movie Marines' or killteam rules it could be a fun little addition to muck around with.

I love the imagery of of a little squirt of plasma getting in someones eyes followed by a "FFFFFffffffuuuuuuuuuuu".
