So I recently played a match against 3,000 points of necrons that had three conrtolling players with three other players, all of us controlling about 500-1,000 points each making it 3,000 points of co-oped forces against the necron threat. and I realized, as I beat the tar out of some of the necrons that their dex is 4th edition, making them a bit underpowered and outdated in this edition of the game. which brought me to wonder: when will the Necrons get a new codex that brings them up to competitive speed with most of the rest of the 40K universe

1)It's not 4th ed.
2)They are next up for a new codex, either september or soonish after that AFAIK... can't remember...

Its a third edition codex, and there are rumors of a november update. We'll see is really all anyone can say.

I hope that they get a new codex relatively soon because I was really looking forward to starting a necron army pretty soon.

Necrons are due out for a nex codex by the end of the year. Or so the rumor mill says. Saying that Necrons are uncompetitive is a putoff for a lot of people, and seems to be the general consensus, but I don't think they are terribly bad as they are, sure the are a HARD army to field, but they also have some of the best rules in the game for straight combat.
