Im currently building a Tyranid army and was thinking of making a Tyrannofex (from scratch obviously) and was just wondering if its worth fielding. I don't want to spend the time crafting the model then to find out that it sucks.

Generally, people don't use them.
They are considered to not be all that great at shooting due to poor BS, and yet they have a Str10 gun. its a confused build for a monster with a 2+ save to be hanging back shooting, all the while taking the enemy anti-tank fire like Lascannons and Railguns. Monsterous Creatures are better in CC due to ignoring armor saves and high str.
that said, if you like the unit and don't mind about not being 100% on the competitive edge(you play nids, so you must not) go ahead and build one.
if it sucks, you could always use it as a Tervigon.

Most people don't use them, that's right.
But some use them and get results. One Tyranid player made a 2 Tyrannofex, 9 Hive Guard list and fared quite well against all those fully motorized enemies: rang 5 of 20 IIRC in a local tournament.
Tyranids have problems with tank spam, Tyrannofexes are one option against that.

The BS3 hurts them immensely, but I've seen them used to relative effectiveness. They're expensive though, even for a TMC.

They can
A) Put out the same shots as 20 termagants, but are much more durable.
B)Put out a Heavy Incinerator shot.
C)Fire 2, yes, 2, Str 10 shots at 48''.
In addition, they can put out
A)A Str 5 large blast at 18''
B)Put out 4,Str5 AP 4 shots at 18''
They can also put out a template
A)Str 5,AP 5
B)Str 3 rending
C)Str 1,but wounds on a 2+.
They have a 2+ save, 6 wounds, and can get regenerative abilities. What is not to love? Automatically Appended Next Post: Take weapon options C,B and C.

What's not to love? How about for the same or less points you could take some Zoanthropes in a pod?
The only thing I've ever seen a Tyrannofex do successfully is miss and draw a lot of fire.

Zoanthrpoes in a pod get ID by Krak missiles.Tyrannofexes save 5/6 of krak missiles, and that means they only lose 1 wound, which they can regenerate.Even Zoans draw fire,as they are vital synapse creatures and everyone fears the mighty lance,as argueably the most powerful shooting attack in the game.
A Tyrannofex doesn't even need synapse control,as the Rupture cannon is long ranged enough to avoid running for cover.

It doesn't matter if they get ID as long as they do their job. Two Zoans with BS4 and S10 lance are far more likely to pop a tank than one MC sitting backfield that'll most likely give whatever it's shooting at a chance at a cover save.

A MC sitting back with 6 wounds is far more likely to destroy tanks over the coarse of a game than 2 modals that blow up 1 LR and then die to a hail of MM and LC fire.

The problem with it is that BS 3 makes it a bit too random, and their high points cost makes them a bit too costy to take in pairs unless aboslutley neccisary.
However, when they do work, its awesome. So they are a unit that is very, very influenced by the dice gods.

I'd rather have the tryanofex, the zoan's have to pass a psychic test (get past my librarians force hood) and THEN roll to hit which got very frustrating for my friend playing tryanids, the 2+ save is sick as well. Just my $0.02
ps. at OP here's a link for quite a kewl conversion from a carnifex if your interested,

Yeah it's BS3 but at the same time, it's TWO shots which I think was the point. Only one should be hitting on average every time you shoot with the possibility of 2 hits or 0 hits. Yes for the cost that's not very good but they are an absolute monster to take down.
One of the guys at my local club takes them often and usually just marches them up with the rest of the army while shooting my predator at the opposite corner of the board or something.

I use one with a triple-Zoanthrope-brood-of-three-in-a-spore combo.Devastating.Coupled with a couple of Mawlocs,3 Tervigons in Troops a Tyrant and Swarmlord in HQ,it is the most devastated IG mech line I have ever seen.
