This topic has been discussed before but not for a long time we've had three new codex's come in the last year (Dark Eldar, Grey Knights and Sisters of Battle).

What is the most expensive army to field at the 1500-2000 point level using GW models, not Forge World or stuff from third parties?

And what is the cheapest army, again using GW stuff only (no Green Army Men counting as Guardsmen and other such shenanigans)?

I think you can make a legal GK army with Draigo and two Paladins.

Most expensive is probably going to be foot guard or the all metal sisters of battle. Just the number of models needed drives the cost way up, and there's no easy way to acquire them in bulk like you can with orks and Black Reach cast offs.

Least expensive is probably going to be Draigo wing. 10 Paladins, Draigo, a Libby and maybe a couple of dreads is like 1500 points easy. 4 boxes and 2 characters.

Atm, probley Sisters because of their all metal models and a single troop choice costs around $100... sry i dont know the equilvant to pounds

Imperial Guard is probably the most expensive army. Orks can also be up there, but with IG infantry at ~$41 for a squad of 10 with a heavy weapon and a GL/Flamer (~$50 with a melta/plasma) with *Cadians* and nearly $60-70 for the metals, plus a dozen $35/40 Chimeras and then a few other $45-70 vehicles, IG can be *DUMB* expensive. My current 2000pt IG Tournament army would be ~$1,200 if I'd actually had to pay anything approaching retail for it, you can probably add another 30% of it were metal infantry, not counting bitz and other stuff I bought.

GK's can be the cheapest as already mentioned. Draigowing can make a 2000pt army with like 12 models and a minimum legal sized army with 3.

IG are definetly the most expensive due to the need for tanks, artillery, etc.. Cheapest is probably Necrons. Especially if you include things like paints in.

I was putting all my IG boxes together and did some quick math in my head and found they they totaled up to about $600 (not including metal blister packs mind you) and that's for about 2000 points worth of troops.

Any 'Nid players out there? They seem to use large hordes of troops and I know the big bugs can cost about $50 a pop.

all metal Sisters of battle is expensive, but they are going to plastics and finecast soon.

Dark eldar karnival armies are expensive. Wracks+grotesques+beastmasters. but thats a specific selection theme and not really the army

Deathwing is actually one of the cheaper armies...7 boxes of Terminators and one begged/borrowed/stolen Terminator gets you to a full Troops FOC, a Command Squad, and Belial.

People do it as 35 TH/SS Terminators, 7 of them with CMLs, and Belial with a TH/SS. It should be about $300-320 after all is said and done.

Yes nids can get expensive quick if your running a swarm list, but truthfully you do need the models and will use them every time with termagaunts because you WILL be using a tervagon. actually the larger bugs arnt that much of a problem because points wise they tend to run close to the same points as a very upgraded russ or a cheap land raider. thats why i run genestealer spam Less models to build and paint and can wipe marines quite well.

orks can get pricey if you don't go with AoBR boyz green tide 180 boys at $29 for 10 boys .. 522 just for the troops.

The question is loaded because you can play a few of the codex armies as beat-sticks, mechanized, or horde.

For general all rounder prices: Grey Knights and Blood Angels would be the least expensive due to higher point costs. Sisters of Battle would be the most expensive due to the cost of metal and the fact that the models only come in blisters.

Grey Knights, Space Wolves, and Dark Angels can all go the beat stick route and run high point cost independents and terminator wearing models making them even less expensive, but death star lists can be easily countered by savy players. Horde armies such as the Imperial Guard, Tyranids, and Orks can approach the cost of Sisters of Battle by running a lot of troops, but you can buy 30+ guardsman for less than the cost of 10 Sisters. The only army that may be more expensive than Sisters of Battle would be tank-heavy Imperial Guard. Running 3 squadrons of Leman Russes and 3 squadrons of Valkyries/Hellhounds not to mention Chimeras for each squad would be pretty pricy.

Most expensive is IG - Death Korps of Krieg - with all those FW models.
Cheapest seems to be Draigowing.
