Im new and i was just kinda wondering why people dislike the space wolves so much ( i know very little about them). Is it something about their fluff? Their rules? what is it?

The gist of it is: Fluff smacks of "Jerks that get away with anything", the word Wolf is used ridiculously, better stuff yet cost less than regular marines.

What is up with people making threads that are copies of threads that were just made a couple weeks ago here?

It's the fluff and their general underpricedness, basically.

Becasue they get Long Fangs.A Dev Squad with five weapons, and an ability to split fire, for less than a regular Dev squad.

This. Contradictory and confused fluff that's overexaggerated and silly even by 40k standards coupled with an army list that's basically "we do everything normal marines do, but better, and with a 15% price discount!" in addition to incentivizing army lists that play nothing like what one would normally imagine SW's being (e.g. heavy weapon tank gunlines).

Pretty sure it says somewhere on Dakka to start a new thread if you have further questions on something already closed. I guess the real question is why do people get so irate about questions being asked, especially by new members who should be welcomed, and not berrated or rebuked for asking a question. It's easy enough to not get involved in a thread if you don't like the question, for ANY reason.

Do the wolves have anything that compensates for the low cost of dev squads? Expensive characters or equipment for instance?

I like Space Wolves, from a fluff standpoint. Vikings in space? Awesome in my book.
From a gameplay standpoint I don't mind them either, but that's just because the only Space Wolves player I know sucks with them.

Not really. The closest things they have to 'weaknesses' are that you might have to take a meltabomb on one of your characters (they can't have identical equipment), and some of their choices that you weren't going to take anyway are not very good (Sky/Swiftclaws.) About the only thing they can't do better than other marines is TH/SS terminators, simply because they cost much more.

"Listen closely Brothers, for my life's breath is all but spent. There shall come a time far from now when our Chapter itself is dying, even as I am now dying, and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then my children, I shall listen for your call in whatever realm of death holds me, and come I shall, no matter what the laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime."-Last words of Leman Russ the Primarch of the Space Wolves Chapter of Space Marines.

Fluff wise they're nothing but comic relief taken too seriously.
Rules wise the epitomize everything that's wrong with 40k... too many marines, fluff breaking rules/stories, horrendous power creep, and it all comes in a single book.

They are drunken werewolf space vikings.

What's to like?

That and the too many puns spoil the beer writing style.

Old SW are called "long fangs" because they are "long in the tooth" (old slang for "old stuff").

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

And I thought 'long in the tooth' was an old-fashioned phrase meaning 'has undercosted special rules'. Who says the internet isn't educational?

If you are referring to long fangs being cheap before 5th, I must retort with a " LoL WUT?"

In a nutshell:

-Overuse of the word "Wolf" or its variants.
-Ruined fluff (which IMHO had a lot of potential).
-Overpowered in the way that their units are cheaper than other marines and do the same things, but better.

I think he was primarily referring to their 2E incarnation where they were the 1st distinct codex, and were by far the most powerful book except for the even more broken 2E Eldar codex (who are still feeling the reverberations of that nerf today)

I don't understand why people dislike the over the top fluff. it was written by the victor, so of course it is going to be over the top. If it wasn't nobody would buy them.

THe only reason I dislike them are razorback spam lists, and the way they are cheaper and better than vanilla marines.
