I had a real TFG moment today.
In my collection,I have a SM Sg with a combat blade and bolt pistol. The entry for Sgts say rthey may swap their bolter or pistol for a chainsword. Now,chainsword and combat blade are the same in game terms. Both a normal CCW.He refused to play me because I had run out of chainswords and used a combat blade instead. He claimed my model wasn't WYSIWYG.Was he right in saying this/

It makes no practical difference in the current ruleset.
In 2nd edition, when chainswords actually had their own rules, he would have had a valid point. These days, whether you give him a chainsword, a knife, or a pointy stick makes absolutely no difference ruleswise.
The chainsword for the sgt is just to make him stand out a little from the regular scouts.

In other words, he was "right" that your model was not WYSIWYG exactly, but he was being an donkey-cave. TL;DR: You were in the right here, just not exactly within the letter of the rules. EDIT: Draigo'd

That guy must of either been a neckbeard or a rules lawyer, and just wanted to be a turd. Chainswords just provide a weapon for CC, just like a combat blade.

That guy is wrong a CC weapon is a CC weapon. Just to spite him play him again but make sure that everything "Counts as" something else.

He was technically correct. However, since the in-game effect of the wargear on the model was 100% identical to the in-game effect of the wargear he should have had it was a pretty pointless objection. "He's supposed to have a normal CCW but you've given him a normal CCW"..... Similarly, some people give assault marines two pistols because they like how it looks - they still have two CCWs in combat and they still only shoot once so it's exactly the same in game terms as having pistol + chainsword.
