I recently traded off my Tau for an assortment of Nids and I, currenlty, know very little about them; only having browsed through their codex. Coming to me are as follows:

1 Broodlord
29 gaunts
12 gants
8 stealers
1 Zthrope
2 Carnifex (one is old metal "one eye" version)

I'm going to attempt to put together a 1000pt (maybe 1500pt) CC oriented army from these models, but I'm unsure of whatI should purchase to round it out; being VERY limited financially, they need to be priority purchases.

I'm aware I need some more synapse creatures within the list, but I can't decide on what is best for the point limit (e.g. a Hive tyrant or Tyranid prime). Any help getting Hive Fleet Thanatos of the ground would be greatly appreciated!

If you want a scary ass army just get much more genestealers and broodlords with a few squads of ygmarls (think that's how to spell it). nothing freaks people out more than a billion rending attacks poping out of the board sides, plus you can have the ygmarls hide in the middle, they have nowhere to hide. use one of the carnies as the swarmlord, he's a beast.

The main problem I see is no HQ choice, unless your using a 4th ed codex. For now I would proxy the broodlord as a prime if your oppents allow such a thing. Get a crap ton of stealers, and invest in some venomthropes for the 5+save, and then get a Hive Tyrant, and a battleforce. That shoudn't cost you to much. And you'll have around 2000 points. For Heavys, I would convert up a Tyranofex (freakin crazy) or get a trygon/Mawloc.

I'm intending to make a purchase (or two) once I get the army and start putting them together.

The HQ issue is one of the things I plan on spending my money on; around $60-$70 is the limit.

Stealer swarm sounds like a fun time, but for now, I'm looking for the one or two (moderately priced) models that would make this into a somewhat viable list. This is until I start painting them up and am able to add to them, of course.

Thank you both for the input, thus far.

Take your 2 carnifexes and convert them to Tervigons. The correct size bases are availbile from GW ($5 each IIRC) add some green stuff/tervigon on the belly = tervigon). Buy 2-6 Hive guard (or convert them from warriors), More Genestealers is good.

Are tervigons a good option if one is lacking in termigant numbers. That is something I was considering, off the bat, but I don't really have the termi models to supply the spawning, yet.

The hive tyrant is always a good option, if a bit pricey in both points and cash, however, it should fit into your price range. If you do decide to go for the tervigon conversion, you can go to your FLGS and if they happen to have a oval base, ask if you can just trace it out onto paper, then go home and cut out some cardboard. Also, another option is to get two boxes of warriors ($84) and make 2 primes, or one if you prefer, and then use the remaining 4 models to convert into hiveguard, cheaper, and easy

So I ended up purchasing a box of warriors. One is going to be my Prime; the other two converted Hive Guard. The list I've I came up with for a 1000pt practice game is as follows:

HQ
Tyranid prime BS & LW regen

ELITE
2 Hive Guard

1 Zoanthrope

TROOPS
15 Guants TS
15 Guants TS

10 Termagants Dev

8 Genestealers RC ST
1 BroodLord RC ST

HEAVY
Carnifex ST TW Dev BioPlas FragSp

I'm playing this list at my FLGS on Sunday; and I might pick up another $30 - $50 range item while I'm there. I'm still a little worried about Synapse, so I might keep the warriors as warriors and pick up another box to run a 5 strong squad with the Prime, but that'll hinder my ranged/anit-tank a bit; still up in the air. What do you all think so far?

buy about 10 boxes of termagaunts and 2 carnifexes. convert them into tervigons. that is a great foundation for any nid army. genestealers, hormaguants, hive gaurd. it gets pricy man. look for stuff on ebay

I do want to go that route, but, currently, 10 boxes of termies is out of my spending range right now. That'll be a down the road goal ( just paid for my girlfriend's massage therapy license and insurance and I'm crazy broke right now ).

And what size base is that? Have they actually released that? Can you show me a link?
I'm guessing you can't because it doesn't exist, but I'm willing to be proven wrong.

edit:
You definitely need more synapse. The only two you have are pretty easy kills.

I'd drop the Broodlord, drop the ST on the stealers, give them TS...

What about something like this? (requires another warrior box :-/)

Attaching the Prime to the Carnifex, and screening them with the Horms one one side, and have the warriors and Guard screened by some Termis on the other, and the stealers outflanking... would work ok I think.
I just don't see 2 Synapse as being enough at 1k points.
