Hi Guys,

I'm new to Warhammer 40K and I have been playing mainly with Space Marines of a friend - and now I am thinking about making my first army.

I am tempted to go with Grey Knights because I like men in rugged armor.

Before makin any purchase I have been reading the Codex and I came up with the following army list:

HQ
Castellan Crowe 150

TROOPS

Purifier Squad 1 368
4 Purifiers
1 Knight of the flame
2 psycannon
2 halberd
1 hammer
Rhino
Hunterkiller missile
psybolt ammo
5 purifiers
2 psycannon
2 halberd
1 hammer

Purifier Squad 219
4 Purifiers
1 Knight of the flame
2 psycannon
2 halberd
1 hammer
Rhino
Hunterkiller missile
psybolt ammo

Total - 737

I am a bit unsure what to do with the HQ - If he should join squad 2 can he go in the Rhino even though he has Artificier armor? Should I "Combat Squad" the Squad 1 into two 5-man units and leave 1 in the rhino as mobilized support and leave the HQ on foot with the remaining 5 units as an assault force?

Any feedback and tips (particularly with tactics in this point level) will be deeply appreciated.

Also, as I am thinking in expanding this army to 2000 points eventually - would the purifier squads still be usefull?

Thank you in advance,
M.

Crowe's not actually an independent character so he can't join either squad and can only embark in a rhino if he's on his own.

Your first troop choice is a bit confusing. Are you wanting the first squad to be 10 total purifiers? Anyway the purifier spam is one of the most competitive builds for grey knights but it doesn' really shine until around the 1500+ pt brackets. If you really want to use them at 750 points I would make my list as such

HQ
Crowe
150pts

Troops#1
Purifiers x5
x2Psycannons
x2Halberds
x1Hammer
Razorback w/ Psybolt ammo
199 pts

Troops#2
Troops#1
Purifiers x5
x2Psycannons
x2Halberds
x1Hammer
Razorback w/ Psybolt ammo
199 pts

Elites
x1 Venerable Dreadnought
x2 Twin Linked Autocannons
Psybolt ammo
195pts

Total 743 Points

As you can see the purifier spam doesn't yield many numbers or targets in the 750 point bracket. I would recommend going for it anyway. You can always convert the purifers to strike squads or interceptors later on and the razorbacks/dreadnought are pretty standard for any other build anyway. Also note that crowe is not and IC so he cannot join a squad nor can he ride in a transport with another squad even if there is room. The only way he can get a transport is if you purchase it for another squad and give it solely to him. Hope this helped and good luck!

Thanks for all the replies!

I had my list in a neat excel file and made a mess when copying it...

I had no idea about the HQ not being an IC - I assumed it was a general rule as I have been playing with space marines and all my HQs so far were IC. Sad little noobcake...

I will be playing mainly Orks (most likely a killa kan wall) - which at this point range might prove troublesome - and so that's the reason I was thinking about purifiers (even though I totally agree it might prove troublesome to use them effectively with such a small amount of troops).

Any other recommended strategies before I make a big purchase? Murphy's Law tells me that as soon as I order my troops I will find out that I should have bought termies instead... :p

Please help a brother to grill some green meat!

Thanks again guys!

Another quick question: Why are razorbacks preferable than rhinos on my purifier squad?

I sincerely thought it would be better to have units firing psycannons from within the rhinos, either in assault or heavy mode, other than the razorback heavy bolter.
What am I missing (which considering my lack of experience in strategy games in general, might be a great deal)?

Thanks again for all the feedback!

Honestly I'd say that Razors are a better route for the purifier list. The razors are a great mobile firing platform. If you did go Rhinos consider the cost. A single unit of 10x purifiers w/rhino is 280 without any upgrades at all. They are 300 a piece if you include Psycannons. Yea you have more bodies but dropping the Psyrifle dread puts a bit of a hole in your antitank role. Also you get more more firepower with 1 psycannon+psybolt razor.
