So I thought it was time to edit this blog, and focus it purely on my Homebrew Marine army. I'll start another for Ork & Gobbos as that one gets underway. I've deleted all the other stuff, and just left the Marine stuff, from concept, to (hopefully one day in the not too distant future) finished force.

I've been having a play about with spacemarine painter to come up with my main chapter livery. I'm pretty settled on the looks below:
Veterans 1st company:
Terminators 1st Company:
Regular troops 2nd Company:
I've spent the day filing off mold lines and stripping paint. The dettol didn't work so well, so I now have then in a different deturgent that has a very slight solution of hydrochloric acid in it to see if that has more success. I'm going to paint up two regular tactical marines using a couple of different techniques to see which one works out best before I commit the whole army to the scheme. I want a fairly dark purple, with a brassy gold kind of metallic on the details. Let me know what you think! I've also been playing around with ideas for a chapter badge, but haven't come up with anything that I really like yet.

Hey Eggs. Your images from the first post aren't showing up for me. 2nd ones are. The colour scheme looks good...the copper and purple tones are a good match. Look forward to seeing some actual models

The pics I've linked to flickr seem to work sporadically, but as some of them aren't of miniatures, I didn't want to upload em to Dakka. I will do with future posts, as they'll be of minis.

Ok. Last post of words, but I've included some images to try and garner some interest in the blog. :-)
One thing I've been blown away by is the sheer cost of this hobby these days. I have a bag of about 50 GW paints and inks from my last excursion into warhammer/ 40k (probably ranging from 15 - 20 years old). I thought I'd just go and buy replacements, but by the time I'd added all the colours I need to just paint my marines chapter basics, I was at £50! This was only about 22 pots, which, last time I painted, would have come to about £15? I'm going to dig out the old bag, and see if any of the pots are useable before I go spending a fortune on new paint. Another thing I'm finding weird, is that plastic or resin models seem to be the benchmark these days. Last time I painted, Lead miniatures were the cream, and plastic was the poor man's alternative! All in all though, I'm enjoying soaking up the fluff, and the stunning armies featured on Dakka. I've now acquired a few extra models for my new SM chapter, and developed quite a lot of fluff - I'm actually a part time writer, and I'm going to use the painting and modelling to inspire a draft of a novel that I'm going to submit to the Black Library. As such, I'm heavily developing each squad and company that I'm planning. Hopefully I can use some of you as guinea pigs for the material I'm developing.
I've picked up three plain old dreads, one of which will be converted to an Ironclad, and another of which will be converted to a Venerable Dread. I've also now picked up two lead lightning claw termies to fit in with my existing squad. Only two more to buy! I also still have to find a missing box of my old marines - I'm missing a few models, including apothecary, chaplain, Captain, and a good few troops/ hq that I want to recycle. Anything else will be bought new, and I'll just have to hope and pray the new models fit with the vintage stuff.
My new marines chapter will be similar to my old scheme (see below), but I'll be toeing the codex astartes line regarding trims etc. I used to just paint what I liked, but as this is fodder for novel-fluff, I want things to work within the 40k universe. As you can see in the pics below, my technique used to be very drybrush heavy. In fact it was always undercoat, basecoat, ink, drybrush, lighter drybrush. I'm hoping now that being a bit older, and a lot more patient than I used to be, will enable me to elevate my painting beyond the 'tabletop gaming' quality that I used to aim to achieve. (Getting the excuses in - all these minis are at least 12 years old, many going back to 20 years or more, so any dings, nicks, chips etc are due to being in boxes for the last couple of decades. I'd like to eventually incorporate all my old minis into full blown armies that incorporate new models, as well as the old.
One of my original SM captains. I know his ultramarine symbols spoil it, but I'm hoping I get on well enough with gs that I can mask them all:
Some of the original space-dudes. They'll all be getting a dettol bath soon. And new arms and weapons...
A portion of the old force. There are a lot more hidden somewhere - we moved house last november, and I still haven't finished unpacking. There are a lot of marines, along with heaps of paint and god knows what else still to be found. Note the first ever techmarine at the back. I'm planning on giving him some funky conversions, as well as a few servitors.
I'm not letting myself think of ANY other army, until I complete the following:
Nomadii 1st Company:
Chapter Master
Chaplain
Apothecary
Librarian
Honour guard x 5
Vet squad x 10
Vanguard Vet squad x 5
Sternguard Vet Squad x 5
Terminator Lightning claw squad x 5
Terminator Assault Squad x5
Terminator Thunder hammer squad x5
Venerable Dreadnaught
Land Raider
Rhino
2nd Comapny:
Captain Dorven
tac squad x 10
tac squad x 10
tac squad x 10
assault squad x 10
assault squad x 10
devestator squad x 10
Assault Dreadnaught
Heavy Weapons Dreadnaught
Rhino x 3
Vindicator
Predator
Land Speeder Squadron
10th Company
Scout Squad x 10
Scout Sniper Squad x 10 (including Telion)
I'm getting really excited about getting back into the hobby. I've been reading like a crazy thing, and prepping stuff for mass production. I've stripped two marines, and prepped them for painting - new weapons, arms, shoulder pads and backpacks. No mold lines left, though I messed up my first attempt at drilling barrels - the drill bit was already broken, so pulled to the left and screwed the barrel. As the marines are test pieces, I'm not too bothered - they'll probably get a repaint and new weapons after the test anyway. I have the whole day tomorrow to myself, so I'm planning on assembling and undercoating the marines. I'll also have my first ever dalliance with green stuff - the new tactical shoulder pads have much narrower trim area than the old pads I dug out of a box, so I'm going to try and build them up to match, as well as trying out a couple of chapter icons, to see which is the most effective/do-able.
Tomorrow's task:
That's it for now, but I suspect there'll be an update tomorrow, probably on my frustrations with green stuff!
Edit: does anyone know who these two guys are?

Always nice to see some of the old models. The old calgar model is quite nice. Not sure about what the last two guys are...looks like vindicare assassins or maybe legion of the damned marines? You could always break apart the bases and see what it says on the slot...

It's been a while - I've been kept busy working two jobs, but I finally got a test model painted up, and settled on a scheme for my army. Considering I haven't painted much apart from walls these last couple of decades, I'm fairly pleased with the end result. Still a few places that need touching up, (and some arms!), but it seems old habits die hard. I deliberately forced myself to avoid drybrushing, and the result was a much smoother, less powdery finish. I'll be damned if I know how folk manage to get so much detail into the eye lenses though!
Any critiques or advice is always welcome.
The first of the nomadii celtus chapter. Only 57 more to go and I can start a fight.

So I've pretty much finished painting my first real effort for over 15 years. I was really pleased with it until I took some close ups, and saw all the flaws everywhere...
Ah well, I can only get better. I was chuffed with the crux though.

So, a little update to the Blog, and my progress with returning to the hobby. My Space Marine Homebrew chapter is starting to gain a bit of traction. Due to my colour scheme, I've decided to rename them The Nomadii Imperialis, as the colours I'm using are a bit more regal than celtic. I finished my test piece, and am happy enough with the general colour scheme. I think it's going to look pretty good with a small horde of these guys.
The Purple and Bronze theme is right up my street, and also tips a hat at the scheme I used to use 15-20 years ago. I think the dark base, with green grass also provides a nice contrast to the theme. My game board will be done to match, and my Eldar force will be done in a very pale scheme, so should fit in with it nicely.
The first tactical squad is now underway, along with the first Dreadnaught:
I'm aiming to try and get the 8 standard marines mostly done by the end of this weekend.
My initial force, the mini's I already have, are as follows:
1x 10 man Tactical Squad, with Sergeant, Heavy Bolter and Melta.
1x 5 man Assault Squad, (Chainswords and Bolt Pistols), with Sergeant (Power Fist)
1x 5 man Terminator Squad, with Lightening Claws inc Sergeant
1x Dreadnaught
1 Captain and 1 Apothecary.
Only once I have those models painted up, will I allow myself to add a SM battleforce box, along with a unit of Devestators. From there, we'll see what happens! Enjoying it for now though, and that's the main thing.

So I finished my first Tactical Astartes, and am wholly disappointed with the result. The painting standard is just not good enough. Lots of issues - paint too thick, highlights too clumsy, painting just too untidy etc etc.
I think I need to get a finer detail brush - I'm just using cheapo's I picked up on fleabay, so I'll maybe see if I can score some decent ones. It's a poor workman that blames his tools however.
I'm away down to Edinburgh for a month of courses as of tomorrow, so my evenings will be free to try and get my shizzle together. I'm determined to get the standard up to at least a crisp, tidy finish. As you can see by the pics, I've a long way to go...
I was however, fairly pleased with my first attempts with Green Stuff (The shoulder plates). I initially started, painting a whole squad. I think for the immediate future, I'll just concentrate on one at a time. I get more out of it if I'm seeing a model evolve, than hours of basecoating etc...
Any advice/critique welcome!

So, a bit of progress with my Nomadii Imperialis force. I took the advice offered in a P&M thread, and got myself a wet palette, along with a couple of new brushes, and a Space Marine battle force, to kick start my budding army. I've been impressed with the wet palette so far. To my eyes, I'm achieving a smoother finish already, and these were under coated and base coloured like the first (on the right). I think once I move to a spray primer, I'll be getting closer to where I want to be.
With the addition of the battle force, I actually have enough models to start a fight!
Now to get this first tactical squad finished, so I can reward myself by painting a dreadnaught...

I really like this color scheme. As I read through the post I made a mental list of things that you could do to potentially improve the early results, but by the time I got to the end you had come to the same conclusions and corrected them. So to sum up, I guess congratulations lol. I really like what you've done and I'll keep an eye out for the dreadnaught!

It's a decent color scheme and its good that you're not getting too disappointed. Keep at it, keep refining and you'll see results. The wet palette really helps.
Quality brushes are also a huge deal, but I understand being reticent on spending cash on them. If you do, don't buy the ultimate high end brush, but a good army painter brush will sere you well. Make sure to get a brush cleaner/conditioner to keep it in good shape, or it'll get ruined.
And keep painting!

Thanks! Hopefully as my painting improves you'll see a couple of things worthy of congratulations. So far, I'm really enjoying being back painting. So far it's been slow going, as I've spent most of my time stripping models. Now they're all stripped, and the painting is on!

So, it's taking me a while, but the first half of my first tactical squad is coming together, and overall, I'm fairly pleased with the cohesion. I'm going to do special weapons such as meltas and heavy stuff in bronze and white to make them pop a little.
It's nice to have a few models in the same livery, because it helps me visualise how the whole army will look. Now I just need to pick up a bit of speed, and refine my brush skills.
I'm planning on going down a 'five troops, rewarded with a special character' type painting routine, so I'll get the next termie done once I've finished half the squad (hopefully by tomorrow!)

Aware I'm kind of cross-posting with the PM Showcase, but this here is really the repository for my developing army, and everything that entails. The stuff in the P&M showcase is more an individual model/squad thing for C&C. Hope that's ok. Anyway, first combat squad is finished and based, and I'm mildly happy with them, though there is lots of room for improvement. This squad will be extended to a full tactical squad, with a vintage heavy bolter, and a marine with a small standard on his backpack. I don't want to put individual squad markings on each marine, so I'll have a squad banner for each squad. Nothing fancy. I'm thinking purple and white quarters, with the chapter symbol in the centre, with squad number in the centre of that, and maybe edged in the appropriate codex company colours. Anyway, some pics of the finished squad:
Saergant:
Marines. (I was quite chuffed with the burnt effect on the melta!)
Anyway, I enjoyed putting that little squad together, and am already pushing onward. Assault Dreadnaught WIP (will have Assault Cannon and CC with storm bolter):
After that, I'll tackle another lightning claw or two:
Anyway, that's it for now. Hopefully someone out there is enjoying watching the birth of a new space marine chapter. They are now affectionately being called The Emperor's Purple Pooshflips, as often as The Nomadii Imperialis. I'll get some fluff up soon too.
Automatically Appended Next Post: The Nomadii Imperialis are a chapter of marines from the second founding, descended from the Ultramarines, and sent into the void to find a new homeworld. After searching the stars for decades, they came across a huge asteroid, 32 km across. The asteroid had been hollowed out by a species unknown, but had long since been abandoned. The Nomadii settled in this asteroid, building vast cathedrals in it's guts. Many arcane items of tech had been left by the previous occupants, and these items are researched by the Nomadii's adeptus mechanicus, though are not utilised on the field. The chapter follow the Codex Astartes closely, only deviating on some minor things such as heraldry.
The asteroid, called Nomadus by the marines, can house the entire chapter, including a contingent of three reaver titans adapted to be deployed from space by a pair of superheavy lifter craft.
The asteroid's orbit through space takes it to close proximity of Nova Celtus, which the Nomadii use for recruiting Astartes into the chapter. They have a small, permanently manned fortress on this planet, purely for recruitment and training - due to the long orbital journey of Nomadus, the recruits are trained up to scout standard, then flown to the great asteroid to take their place in the chapter. Nova Celtus is structured around a clan system, which causes many bloody wars, and as a result leads to many great warriors. The chapter benefits from the ferocity of the soldiers of Celtus, many of whom now grace the halls of Nomadus.
Every 250 years, the orbit also passes through the region of space home to the eye of terror, and on these occasions, all battle companies are called home to defend the asteroid-citadel from the denizens of chaos. As a result, the asteroid bristles with gun emplacements and defensive structures.
Kendo Valimour is the current Chapter Master, having taken his place when the founding Chapter Master, Forlan Mist was killed a hundred years ago in a battle with a Tyranid swarm. The chapter detests Tyranids more than most because of this, and will hunt down and cleanse any swarm they can, wanting to exterminate them from the universe. Valimour, like all Captains and Sergeants in the chapter utilises power fists as close combat weapons. As Chapter Master however, he wears two of the mighty gauntlets, fitted with bolters. (Magnus Calgar stand-in).
Kelios Drager is the oldest marine in the chapter. A venerable dreadnaught attached to the first company, he fought alongside the founding Chapter Master from the beginning. His dreadnaught armour is covered with seals and honours, and one of his armaments is dedicated to a huge tally of confirmed kills of mighty foes. He also takes active interest in new recruits, and, unusually for a dreadnaught, goes on many sorties with scouts, to both keep an eye on the young bloods, and teach them the many facets of battle.
Captain of the first company is Burse Rosenbaur. Having rocketed through the ranks, due to many acts of bravery, (sometimes bordering on suicidal insanity), he has systematically beaten the odds time and again. His philosophy is always attack, and never regret.
The Chapter followes the Codex Astartes fairly closely, only deviating from the prescribed organisational structure where heraldry is concerned. Instead of individual squad markings, each squad features a standard, with its squad regalia. This takes the form of simple forms and blocks of colour, with the Chapter Badge, and squad number, as well as company trim. The 10 companies are viewed as a natural progression from Scout to Veteran, thus a marine from second company is generally regarded as superior to a marine from ninth company, however, because 'promotion' to one of the upper companies can only happen when an existing marine dies, discrepancies can arise.
The Company Symbol represents the journey of Nomadus through the void, and also the individual's journey around the circle of life and death and is a circle, on a circle. The large circle represents the orbit, and the small Nomadus itself.

Some goodies arrived from Ebay today. I just can't get my head around the fact that plastic minis are considered superior to metal these days. Goes against the innocence of my childhood that does! Anyway, Chaplain, librarian and standard for 2nd company command squad, terminator chaplain for 1st company command squad (with a terminator libby on the way too.) This miniature acquisition is an addictive game, and harder to kick than a smack habit.
In other news, I was so chuffed to get a combat squad finished, instead of treating myself to a 'character' model, I'm forging onward with the other half of the tactical squad. Maybe about a third of the way to finished. After they're done, I'm going to blitz through the rest of my lightning claws.
My ambitions have grown also. Whereas before, I was just looking to get the models I own painted up, my long term goal is to get the following list done - I figure It'll be fun, and give me plenty varied choices when playing with army lists:
First Company
HQ squad -
Calgar, Chaplain (Term), Apothecary, Champion, Standard Bearer, Librarian (Term) + 5 Honour Guard (Modified Vets?)
Veteran Squad x 10
Vanguard Veteran Squad x 10
Sternguard Veteran Squad x 10
Terminators Lightening Claws x 5
Terminators Thunder Hammers x 5
Terminators Assault Cannon/Cyclone Missiles x 5
Terminators TBC x 5
Venerable Dreadnaught
Land Raider Godhammer
Rhino (Command)
Rhino (Magnetised)
Second Company
HQ Squad -
Captain, Standard, Chaplain ( PA), Apothecary, Librarian ( PA) + 5 Command Squad.
Tactical Squad x 10 - Melta and Heavy Bolter
Tactical Squad x 10 - Flamer and Missile Launcher
Tactical Squad x 10 - First Company - Bit special TBC
Assault Squad x 10
Assault Squad x 10
Devestator Squad x 10
Devestator Squad x 10
Assault Dreadnaught
Heavy Weapons Dreadnaught
Dreadnaught (Magnetised)
Rhino (Magnetised) x 2
Vindicator
Predator
Land Speeder Squad x3 (1 of each variant)
Tenth Company
Scout Squad x 10
Sniper Scout Squad x 10 + Telion
Land Speeder Storm
Anyway, still having fun, in fact, seem to be having more fun now that I have a few painted models on the shelf, and another load underway! Don't know why I took such a long break from the hobby.

So, a small update to my Imperialis force, but an update all the same. My recycled metal tac squad is nearing completion, so I've been looking ahead, and prepping the rest of my troops so I can spray undercoat them all at once. Just have the details and arms to add to the first squad. You can see the WIP dread in the back too:
Particularly liking the vintage heavy bolter fella on the right. I think he shows that my blending is improving slowly but surely:
I have to say, I've been pretty disappointed with the Space Marine battle force. There aren't enough heads to match up with the armour - there are seven sets of MK 6 legs, but only four 'beakie' helmets, so not enough parts to make up the troops as per GW canon. I'm ordering more beakies, as my ocd won't let me have MK 7 helmets with MK6 armour. I did email GW about it, but their response was pathetic in the extreme. In addition to that, some of the mold lines are pretty horrendous on the models, so it has taken me a lot longer than I thought it would to prep them. Models on the shelf just need some bitz added and they are ready for spraying - 1 full tac squad, 1 5 man scout squad, and the rest of my lightning claws:
You can also see the two other dreads that still need stripping in these pics.
And lastly, the queue for prepping. I'll hopefully put a dent in these tonight, and be undercoating them all by tomorrow - 2x 5 man assault squads (will be bulked out to 10), a 5 man squad that will be accompanying 5 devastators, and a pile of HQ models:
That's it for now. I suspect once they are all undercoated, painting will start accelerating.

Progress of a sort has been achieved. First wave of the Imperialis second company is built and primed. A ten man tac squad (with rhino/razorback), 2x five man assault squads, a five man scout squad and the bolter wielding half of my first devastator squad, along with the remaining four lightening claw termies.
I've already started scouring eBay for elements of the next wave, but I'll be concentrating on painting acres of purple for the foreseeable future...

So, I'm pretty disappointed with how long it's taking me to get this marine army together, and a large part of the reason is probably laziness if I'm honest, so I'm going to publicly commit to a bit of a challenge. If anyone is following this, then expect to see major progress over the next two months. I'm aiming to complete 5 men or a vehicle every week for the next couple of months. To get this week moving with a bang, I want to finish the four tac marines on the right, and the 5 man assault squad on the left before next weekend.
The assault squad are the first box fresh minis I've started, and also the first I've spray-under coated, so hopefully they'll lose the chunky ness of the tac marines paint job.
Should be doable - it's less than a marine a day. If I fail, mock me, shame me, and call me bad names...

Small progress. I think perhaps my initial target was a little ambitious, but I'm working towards it. Assault squad are base coated, washed, and just require Highlighting, detailing and arms etc now. I've finished two more of the tac squad, with the other two well underway. I need to acquire another lead miniature to complete the tac squad, so it'll be one man short for now.
It's a nice feeling when a squad and army starts to grow! I'd forgotten how satisfying it was.

Now to get cracking with the heavy bolted marine and last trooper. Don't understand how some of you can churn out tons of well painted miniatures so quickly...

So my marines have been a little abandoned of late, while I got my teeth into starting up my high elves. I was also a little put off by the fact I wasn't happy with two of the three remaining members of the first tactical squad. One was a rogue trader era mini that just didn't fit in, and one was a 3rd or 4th edition heavy weapon marine. Whilst I liked the marine's body, the way his 'over the shoulder heavy bolter' just had a hollow in it to fit a standard backpack felt a bit... meh.
I recently picked up a box of devastators, to make up a three ML, one LC squad, so I had a couple of heavy bolters left over. The heavy weapons in the devestator box are lightyears ahead of the old stuff (despite only including one missile launcher! GW, you suck). Tonight, I set to knocking up a frankenstein. I reckon there must be 15 to 20 years between the body of this mini and the arms and weapon. Small change in the lifespan of an astartes, I'll give you that. It's not finished yet - a fair bit of highlighting and tidying up to do, but it should give you an idea of what I'm going for. I'll be dropping the right arm a bit lower (from the viewer's perspective). I've also replaced the rogue trader era with a model that needs a bit of Green Stuff, but I have a whole array of new sculpting tools to sort that out. Anyway, I give you Gene, the double hard geezer;
Hopefully have the squad finished in the next couple of days. Where have I heard that before?

So, in the longest ever tac squad paintfest, I finished my heavy bolter marine. This tac squad is taking ages, but never fear. What's the rush? I'm enjoying it, and there are only two more regular marines to go. Anyway, now that I have a proper hobby space set up, I knocked up a lightbox of sorts from card, and the photos are a fair improvement to my eye. Should improve more when I start using my camera, instead of being lazy and getting my iphone out. Still, I think the pics say a lot for the iPhone! You'll have to excuse the strand of static grass on the bolter - I missed it completely.

Face on, double hard dude:
Joining his battle brothers. Only two more to go and I can get cracking with their rhino:
Anyway, I'll hopefully get the last two marines done sharpish. As always, C&C welcome.

In preparation for finishing my tac squad, I thought I'd better get a move on with their wheels, so tonight, I started experimenting with magnets for the first time. I don't see the point in buying a load of rhino's, and then having to add razorbacks, predators and whirlwinds, so everthing I buy will do double duty as required. That was if I could get to grips with magnetising them. Pleased to say it all went well. Eventually decided on the rear position for my hunter killer missile - I want to be able to mount a load of these on my vehicles when required, so magnets there too. Pretty pleased with the result all in all.
Just need to get the paint out now!
Razorback with Hunter Killer
Rhino with Hunter Killer
Plain old Rhino.
Onwards and upwards. Second one will be a heavy bolter razorback.

I really like the colours you are using - very regal!
Also surprised your PLog doesn't have more comments as your force is looking rather good.
I look forward to seeing it all come together.

Thanks for the comments folks. Glad to know there are people out there watching, and I'm not just talking to myself!
I was hoping I'd be a lot further on by now, but it is slow going, and I've been a little distracted by my elves. I've never been a quick painter, but I'm hoping to have this tac squad, a dread and a rhino/razorback done by the end of the month. Don't think I've hit a deadline yet though, so we'll see!

It's been three months since my last post, but I haven't been sitting idle. I've been attempting a pretty big batch paint. Thirty marines, armour is basecoated, and washed so far, and I've started building up the layers on the armour too. Time consuming, but I'll end up with a big chunk done. I've started prepping the second wave too. Slow progress as always, but progress nonetheless.
First wave on the right consists of:
10x tactical (plastic)
5x assault (plastic)
5x tactical (plastic)
5x assault (metal)
5x lightning claws (metal)
1x dread (metal)
1x magnetised razorback/rhino (lascannon)
Second wave on the left consists of:
5x plastic scouts
5x plastic scouts (snipers)
5x assault (metal)
5x assault (plastic)
10x Devastators (plastic)
A bunch of HQ's
I'm currently scavenging bits and pieces from fleabay to finish off the third wave too - I have a bunch of stuff that will need converting in the third wave, so it will be a lot more time consuming. Some old metal blood angel models to tweak for my second company 1st squad, another bunch of mixed metal ones to tweak for another tac squad, a bunch of metal termies to tweak, and a metal Marneus Calgar with a ton of Ultramarines iconography to replace with my own. Here's hoping the god of green stuff is on my side! Once that lot is done, I should have my entire second company. Then it's onto the first company, which will be getting done with FW stuff. I'm using armour marks to signify time-served, thus all devastators in MK's 8 & 9, first company get the rare stuff.
