Would it not be a real shock to everyone if "6th Ed 40k" came out as
Warhammer 40,000 - Crusade Edition
Covering events from the Crusade up through the the end of the Battle of Terra.
It would give SM players all sorts of things to buy - SM Jetbikes, Legio Cybernrtica units. Older sets of SM armor.
and then they would realize they don't exist/have rules for 40k 5th Ed.
Plus you'd be forced into one of the 18 legions not a custom chapter.
And once again the non SM armies would be pretty much left out.

Wouldn't be 40k then would it?
Also there are elements of the Legions that differed from others.
And xenos races were more populous than ever...
Though Nids and Tau wouldn't exist... neither would GK actually...

I actually expect to stay exactly where we are in 6th edition and merely broaden the fluff line, rather than advancing it.

I think 6th edition is going to involve Tyranids hugging everybody. With acid
Eldar will become arrogant again, and will create a new god to be friends with Slaanesh and help him overthrow the other 3 chaos gods.
The Emperor will make some noise; mankind will take it as a sign and do something. Then they'll realize he was just expelling gas from being cooped up on a toilet for so long. Something had to come out.

The reason they haven't had the game go forward is because it wouldn't be in the 41st millennium anymore; they wouldn't put it back in time for the same reason.

Expanding the story just 10 years into M42 would open up gigantic new fluff opportunities while mostly keeping the year in the 41st Millennia.
GW already does it, but backwards. Every codex/rulebooks will cite and talk about incidents that took place in the 35th Millennia and what have you.

As awesome as that would be, it would require them to change up the fluff a lot to make room for the races that weren't really around at the time like Tau, and Nids. The heresy is easily my favorite piece of 40k fluff but I feel like with the exception of primarch models, it should just stay fluff.
P.S. Damn you GW just make primarch models already!

Instead of that, they should just come out with the rulebook and make it an option to play 40K or crusade. Same models, but two different games.

A Horus Heresy expansion in a book the size of the Apocalypse book would be amazing, but that's really GW's last ditch fallback plan. Nothing will boost sales like an expansion like that, and I personally have no idea where they could go from there.

If anything, it might drive players from the hobby, if their were no Templars, i probably wouldn't play SM, Imperial Fists maybe or World Eaters. Some models might me nice for counts as, but they would probably loose money because if they jacked out all these new models(or recycled old ones), how do they know if people will like them? A lot of my friends look at pre - heresy armor and just walk away because of the archaic look.

Ther was a rumour on Warseer that Forgeworld expressed an interest in doing this with a series of Imperial Armour books, seeing as they already have all of the Crusade pattern power armour variants, old pattern vehicle conversion kits, and things like the Contemptor pattern dreadnought, all of which sell a lot.
I'd be more interested though in what they could do with alien races - Megarachnids would be a cool companion force to my Tyranids.

I think you read the cover wrong, what you actually read was the word 'Warhammer', then they covered up the 40,000 part with the price sticker

They can advance the fluff into the next millennium without changing the name or losing any ground in fluff. It's a logical step to advance the timeline and the last few codexes show a push that way. Sooner or later Cypher has to reach Terra, the Golden Throne must fail, The wolftime comes, a black crusade breaks out of the Eye and threatens to push into the Sol system. The Tyranids origins need to be discovered, so much to be revealed or developed. 6th Ed will go forward but a HH book like apoc is probably in the works. It's something that the popularity of The HH and the prevalence of pre Heresey armies nearly demands.
