My buddy plays orks, and he was wondering if taking the biker upgrade on Nobs gives them a 4+ armor save. he said that in the Warbikers entry, their nob sergeant gets a 4+ armor save, so nob bikers get a 4+ armor with their bikes. My argument was that the Nob bikers are an entirely different unit from the Warbikers, and so that entry doesn't apply to a separate entry. What's the consensus here? We consulted the FAQ, nothing was mentioned in there. Thanks for any help.

Warbikes give you a 4+ armour and 4+ cover save. NObs gain a Warbike.

Turns them into Warbiker Nobs, giving them the statline from the warbiker section.

The specific rules btw:

ADDITIONAL PROTECTION
Bikes are large, solid constructions, and are often fitted
with protective armour and shields to deflect and
absorb incoming fire. Bike riders benefit from the
protection offered by their bike
, which increases their
Toughness characteristic by 1 Note that this increase
does not affect the model's Toughness for the purposes
of instant death (see page 26).

And then in the Ork Codex Wargear:

Warbike: Any model mounted on a Warbike adds 1 to his Toughness (though not for determining Instant Death), gains a 4+ amour save, and the Exhaust Cloud! special rule.

The italicized would be the standard bike protection, while the bold would be the Ork Warbike specific benefits.

Edit: It's worth stating that I believe, and could very well be wrong, that taking the bike upgrade for regular nobs gives them an additional wound over the one in the warbiker profile. Regular nobs have 2 wounds, and pay 25 points for the bike upgrade. The nob line in the warbiker section is a single regular boy upgraded to a nob for 10 points. I could of course be completely wrong here as I don't play orks.

No, nobs stay at 2 wounds. Nothing about the bike gives you an additional wound

I mean that the nob warbikers stat line only has 1 wound, or at least that's what a quick glance online tells me.

Edit:

To explain:
Nob + bike upgrade = has 2 wounds

The 'Nob warbiker' unit entry which is listed in the warbiker profile = has 1 wound

I was just pointing it out, as I said I don't play Orks

Specifically that, contrary to what cgmckenzie said, it does not give them the profile in the warbiker section. At least, it doesn't appear to from my understanding of the rules.

Check the Orks errata for the correct Warbiker Nob profile.

Aha that makes sense now. Weird that they wouldn't catch a up like that before printing given it's kind of critical nature. Then again, GW isn't the best at QA >_<

Wanderingfox - this was an error in the first printing of the codex, which had warbiker nobs only havng one wound

They then erratad this and, in common with their normal errata included them in the next printing...which then had all warbikers having 2 wounds, as they "over corrected"

Warbikes do NOt alter your W characteristic.

I was not suggesting that it did. I was making sure the proper unit profile was used since the only information i could find contradicted with what cgmckenzie had said.

I was never saying it altered the number of wounds given to the model. I just noticed that there was an inconsistency with what the rules would make the profile (2 wounds 4+ save), and what was suggested as the profile to use (1 wound 4+ save).

I was just trying to make sure that the OP didn't see that post and use the 1 wound profile. That's it

The statline from the warbiker section is irrelevant - it's an entirely separate unit with no connection to a nob mob.

When you purchase a warbike for nob he gets the benefits described in the warbike wargear section. That, coincidentally, happens to be the same statline as the nob in a warbikers mob.

Wandering - I was explaining where your stat confusion was coming from, was all. The mistake in the second printing just adds a wonderful confusion to things!

I know that, it was just easier to type that then to type the entire warbike entry on my cellphone telephone.

Seems to be a recurring trend, no? >_<
