Hi
I was just wondering what the best way to take down a eldar avatar with chaos marines?

Shoot it with Missile Launchers and Lascannons until it dies and just stay out of assault range (its slow as tar). Funnily enough its how almost every army deals with it. If you only have meltaguns in your then I would suggest you change it asap.

Avoid assaulting it unless its already weakened and you have a fist etc to put wounds on it reliably. Of course Abaddon will smash it, as will big units of Terminators (but they still don't really want to assault it with full wounds) but they aren't really competitive choices.

Well, avatars can be very hard to kill, especially when fortuned. The best way to kill one is not to kill, really. It's so slow, that if you kill the rest of his/her army, he won't actually do much.

Thanks guys
i have abby and i also have 5 termies with claws and mark of slaanesh. Concerning lascannons i only have a land raider and a single one in a csm squad.
i like the idea of just keeping out of its way also

Necron Tomb somewhere in Scandinavia.

You can also throw large assault against it, for example your termies can do lots of amounts of damage to it, just change Mark of Slaanesh to Tzeench and they can hold on bit.
Mass fire is also good: whihout taking lascannons&missile launchers, take auto cannons. Avatar has only 3+ save so mass fire will take him out very quicly.
Or, like woodbok said, ingore him! Concertrate your fire and units to other units in his/her army and shoot avatar only if its getting too close.
IMO, long range shooting is bestest, in any way you like!

i made the mistake of painting and modelingn the termies slaaneshi because i ussually play them against marines and the plus 1 initiative really helps :/

Since I play Eldar and CSM I can confirm that mass fire is a viable way of taking out the Avatar. In fact my personal feeling is that big gun hits fizzle too often.

Slightly offtopic, but in your gaming environment (tournaments?) are people really forcing you to take only those marks that you have painted on them? Or is this you, personally, fancying CSM fluff?

My armies:
Eldar
Necron
Chaos Space Marines
Grey Knights
Imperial Knights
Death Guard

Oh no its not people oppressing me or anything i just like to play the guys the way they are painted (my own worst enemy really :/)
i don't really like tournaments as it tends to attract some unpleasant people so i usually just play with friends or just friendly games with people i meet in the Gw near me.

There are much more troubling things in most Eldar armies. Anyways, ignoring it is your best bet, especially if he keeps geting fortuned. Then when your opponent forgets to fortune him, cause its being wasted on him, open up with whatever you have. Small arms fire works the best because its usually the cheapest and most abundent source we have. But ML and Lascannons work well too.

REPENT for tommorrow you DIE!!!!

The best way to beat the avatar is to ignore it all together. He is slow, and hasn't got many weapons that can harm you at long range.

If your opponent fortunes it, then fire on a tank or platform. If he doesn't, blow its metal brains out the back of it's head with asd much low strength weapons as you can. Forcing it to take a lot of poorly 3+ saves is better at killing it than him saving 50% of your high strength stuff. It's destruction will likely demoralize him, for there is one solid choice for selection of Drago, when a pair of Libby and GKGM do more, for picking the Swarmlord for a Tyrant's job, for picking an Avatar when a seer and fire dragons can do so much more.

It is for a show of strength. Most newbie players succumb to this, buying up Calgar when they realize later than Lysander is cheaper, and a better fighter, or Vulkan a better enhancer, or Sicarius or Tiguirius a better all round.
Or buying a LR when a simple rhino furfills the job.
Many newbies (playing other newbies, because they know they will get tabled if they paly anyone else) pick the Avatar because it is fluffwise, the master of Eldar, but it is easier for a Wraithlord and a Fire Dragon Squad to do worse.

So, this newbie player has his *mega*-monster on board, sure as hell that anything that comes close will be found wanting a new face, what do you do?

Blow as many Lasguns or Bolters into it as possible, and laugh as his flaming debris scatters over the cosmos, again.

Don't getme wrong, sometimes one of these models is actually a better choice, but they are rare.

Don't take this the wrong way OP, but it sounds like you are relatively new,or just restarting after a few years, so I figure you are going to be playing other new guys.
