Finally painting some of my own Space Hulk stuff. I'm trying to really bring out the complexity of the mini here. Whether I succeeded is always yours to decide.

And I put him up on Cool Mini for those of you who care to vote.

Looks wonderful. I really like the more sedate shades of red, and the light blue "gems" really pop right off the model.

My only criticism is that the storm bolter barrels could be drilled a little wider. It slightly resembles a pig's snout as is!

I really like that washed out red tone. You did an amazing job on this miniature.

After painting up the armor so dark, I decided that he really needed bright gems. So, I used a fairly light color as the darkest part of the gems.

Often, people learn to go all the way to black with their gem effects, but it isn't really necessary for the effect.

Really impressive mate 1 thing i'd like to ask is the golds are they nmm work or lots of washes to tone the gold dwn as it looks really really good..! i've just done some space hulk myself and would appreciate your opinion as i have only been painting for just under 2 years so it would be good to get some feed bck on simular models..

The golds I used here are all NMM. In order to match the rest of the mini, I mixed a little purple into the darker shades of the color.

The color recipe starts out with a terracotta color, shaded with purple, then highlighted first towards a yellow. Before you reach the pure yellow, start highlighting up to pure white. You'll end up with more golden colors if you let yourself approach the yellow further, and more coppery colors if you stay far away from pure yellow.

On a side note, shading golds with purple is a good idea overall. This has to do with color theory- on the color wheel, yellow and purple are 'complimentary colors'- which means that they contrast well, and mix into a brown color. Having some purple at the shaded areas of your yellow metals can really help them pop.

Oh, you definitely can.

I find that the trick to improving is being fearless. Find some technique that intimidates you a little, and paint up a mini that really showcases that technique.

Also, there are so many great online resources available- go ahead and use them. The best ones are the ones that give you a good step by step to some really complex techniques, and give you the theory behind the project at the same time.

I pulled out some of my older minis a little while ago. I must say, I was holding myself back for a long time- just feeling too comfortable with the techniques that I had figured out to try improving.

Thanks.

I really wanted to get the look of shiny armor without taking away from the NMM I was using for the mini. Ultimately, I'm rather happy with how the magenta turned out, and I'll definitely be using it on the rest of Squad Lorenzo.
